As much as race fans love Formula 1, there have been some complaints in recent years that there hasn’t been enough drama. That tends to be the case when you have a single driver dominating the sport the way in which Lewis Hamilton has done, but those fans cannot complain this season. There has been drama, controversy, and a championship race unlike anything we have seen in quite some time. It is becoming clear that there is not really any love lost between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, which was on full display in the Italian Grand Prix. We had an incident that ended with Verstappen’s car sitting on top of Hamilton’s, with both drivers blaming the other for the crash. Many pointed to the fact that Verstappen did not take the time to ask if his rival was okay, which will only fuel what is already an intense rivalry. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out this weekend in Russia, so let’s take a look at the current Formula 1 odds.

Formula 1 Betting Analysis for the VTB Russian Grand Prix 2021 Race

Lewis Hamilton (-140)

With 7 races left on the season, Hamilton finds himself in the unusual position of sitting in 2nd place in the driver standings. This is by no means an insurmountable deficit, though, as he is just 5 points back of Verstappen, so this is a battle that is likely going to go down to the wire. There is a definite psychological edge that comes with having the lead, though, and Hamilton would like to get that back, especially since he has now gone 4 races since his last win. You would have to say that Russia is a good place for him to get back on a roll, as he has been historically good there over the years. He finished 3rd there in 2020, which snapped a 2-win streak in Russia. There is a reason why he is the clear favorite for this one.

Max Verstappen (+300)

To become a champion, which Verstappen is looking to do for the first time in his F1 career, you need to be able to shut out all the noise around you. He has certainly had to do that in the days since the Italian Grand Prix, with a lot of people blaming him for the Hamilton crash and his seeming lack of empathy after the fact. This, though, is a driver that seems to be solely focused on making that big breakthrough and winning it all after back-to-back 3rd place finishes in the driver standings. One of the things going against him this weekend is that he has never won in Russia, although he was second last season. It will be interesting to see how he reacts if he loses the championship lead to Hamilton this weekend.

Other Drivers to Consider

Sitting at odds of +350, Valtteri Bottas certainly seems to be worth taking a look at. He won the Russian Grand Prix last season and has in fact won it twice in the last 4 years. In fact, in the 7 years since this race returned to the schedule, it has been a member of Team Mercedes that has won it. If that form holds, then we are looking at either Hamilton or Bottas as the winner.
