2020 Tour de France Info

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 29 – Sunday, Sep 20

What is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France is the most famous cycling race in the world. It’s the event that made Lance Armstrong a national hero.

The race often spills into neighboring countries, but this year, the entire event will take place in France. The good news? The Tour organizers won’t scale down the competition.

The 2020 Tour de France will include 22 teams with 8 riders. A total of 176 riders will take part in this year’s race. There will be 21 stages.

9 of the stages will be over a flat surface. 8 will take place in mountainous areas. The event will have 3 hill runs and a single individual time trial.

Top 5 Tour de France Contenders

The Tour de France has both a team trophy and an individual trophy. Check out info on the Top 5 individual contenders for this year’s race.

  1. Nairo Quintana – 3 hills and 8 mountainous stages should set up the 2020 Tour de France for Arkea-Samsic rider Nairo Quintana. Nairo excels on climbs, which makes him the top play to win the trophy this year.
  2. Primoz Roglic – Like Nairo, Primoz is an excellent climber. He’d be our top choice, but he crashed at the Criterium du Dauphine. The crash knocked him from the yellow jersey. If he’s gotten over the crash, he could prove difficult to beat.
  3. Egan BernalThe defending champion, Bernal is just 23-years-old. The key for Egan at this year’s Tour de France is to race smartly. Bernal rides for Team Ineos Grenadiers. They’re the most experienced Tour de France team in the world.
  4. Tadej Pogacar – The 21-year-old Pogacar won 3 stages at the Vuelta a Espana. He also finished second at the Criterium du Dauphine. Although some claim he’s too young to win the Tour, he’s a smart rider. If he’s improved his climbing, he could put fear into Primoz and Nairo.
  5. Thibaut Pinot – Thibaut suffered an injury at the 2019 Tour de France. If he hadn’t, he may have challenged Bernal for the championship. Pinot, like everyone on this list, can excel on long climbs. If he’s ready, he’ll make his presence felt. Whether it will be enough to win is anybody’s guess.
