US Open Best Contenders

This coming Thursday, June 16 will see the start of the 116th US Open, and it’s fair to say that the 156 players in the field are in for a rough 4 days. Of course, only a small percentage of that group will actually be around to fight for the championship on Saturday and Sunday, as the brutal Oakmont Country Club is sure to have a number of big names missing the cut. This is a course where it may almost be a good idea to go for a dark horse pick, as there is just no telling what might happen. The last time Oakmont hosted the US Open back in 2007, it was won by Angel Cabrera, who was able to win despite posting a score of 5 over par. US Open Best Contenders

   

Jason Day (+600)

You don’t get to be the number 1 player in the world by being lucky, and Day is there because he has proven to be a consistent performer at just about every event that he takes part in. He has 3 wins in 11 tournaments this year, including a very nice win at the Players Championship last month. This is a guy that you can never count out, and who you can always expect to see on the leaderboard on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy (+600)

The winner of any major tournament is often the player who come in on the best run of form. McIlroy may well be that man, as he has turned things around after a rather slow start to the 2016 season. The Irishman is great off the tee, but has a tendency to be a little inconsistent with the putter. If he can put both of those parts together this weekend, he will be a legitimate threat.

Jordan Spieth (+650)

The defending champion may well be the player who has a game tailor-made for this particular course. There are few players better on the green than Spieth, and putting is going to be absolutely crucial on a course that demands accuracy and putting prowess. Spieth has already paid a visit to Oakmont ahead of the US Open, and he believes it is the toughest course in the country. This is a young man that loves a challenge, though.

Dustin Johnson (+1200)

Johnson had a total collapse at Chambers Bay last year, and he will be looking to make amends at this year’s US Open. While he has yet to pick up a tour win this season, he has been in the top 5 on a pretty consistent basis. He is one player that you most certainly cannot overlook here.

Justin Rose (+1800)

The Englishman actually had a pretty decent outing the last time the Open was at Oakmont, and that may explain why the online sportsbooks have him among the favorites. It also helps that he is among the best in the game at hitting the green in regulation after a less than flattering tee shot, which is a trait that should serve him very well this weekend.
