At Kentucky Downs, Saturday’s top race is the Grade 2 Kentucky Downs Turf.

Larry Rivelli trained One Timer projects as the chalk. One Timer won the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Sprint, the prep for this.

Front Run the Fred, first in the Van Clief Stakes in the last, will also attract action. So will Dream Shake, Cogburn, and Rivelli’s other runner, Nobals. Gear Jockey, Olympic Runner, and Bad Beat Brian are three more horseplayers may back.

Kentucky Downs Turf Cup | Grade 2

Mike Maker trained Me And Mr. C won the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup. Mr. C knows how to win over Kentucky Downs’ funky layout. So the Maker trainee will attract action.

Red Knight, another Maker runner, Foreign Relations, and a couple from Brendan Walsh’s barn, Verstappen and Santin, will get backing. Get Smokin’, Nautilus, Kitodan, and Never Explain are four more that will have their fans.

West Virginia Derby | Grade 3

Mountaineer Race Track, Chester, West Virginia

Steve Asmussen trained Gigante, first in the Grade 2 Secretariat Stakes in the last, projects as the chalk. Todd Pletcher is likely to saddle the second and third choices in Classic Catch and Ari Gold.

Claude McGaughey is on the fence with Integration. Shug may or may not run the Quality Road progeny. Graham Motion will saddle Dataman, a Tapit runner that could go off at overlay odds.

John C. Mabee Stakes | Grade 2

Connections for just five runners have committed to the Grade 2 John C. Mabee. But like what is often the case at tracks like Del Mar, if the five committed are the only ones that break from the gate, we should still have a fantastic race.

Bob Baffert trained Ganadora should garner plenty of betting dollars. So will Atomic Blonde from the Cristophe Clement barn. Phil D’Amato trains Macadamia and Oakhurst. Paris Peacock, from the Thomas Proctor barn, will also get some play.

Only Pushiness, from the Mike McCarthy barn, is a for sure entrant. Pushiness will face competition.

Few races with grade 1 status for 2 year old fillies exist. Bob Baffert usually enters multiple runners into the Del Mar Debutante. So don’t be surprised if at least a field of seven breaks from the gate.

Del Mar Futurity | Grade 1

Bob Baffert will enter two of his top 2-year-olds, Heartland and Prince of Monaco. Heartland, a Justify sired equine, broke the maiden in the last.

Heartland has a ton of talent but will go off second choice to stablemate Prince of Monaco. The likely chalk won the Grade 3 Best Pal in the last. Expect others to join the field, if anything, to go for third place money behind the Baffert runners.
