Top Stakes Races at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, and Santa Anita Park

The Saturday before this year’s final Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes, shows a list of terrific, graded stakes races. Four of this week’s six stakes happen at Churchill Downs. Top Stakes Races for the Week: Saturday, June 3

 

Regret Stakes | Grade 3

1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies
Track: Churchill Downs | Louisville, Kentucky,
Race type: Thoroughbred – Flat racing

So far, connections for just two runners have entered for the Grade 3 Regret Stakes. Graham Motion will put the saddle on Kitten’s Joy sired Mission of Joy. Mission of Joy won the Grade 3 Florida Oaks earlier this year in March. Then in the last, the Motion trainee finished third in the Grade 3 Edgewood.

The other entrant at this point is Miss Riddler. Trained by Churchill based Eddie Kenneally, Miss Riddler is undefeated after 2 races. More horses will join the fray, no doubt. So check back later this week after the draw.

Blame Stakes | Grade 3

Race type: Thoroughbred – Flat racing

A competitive group led by Todd Pletcher trained Pioneer of Medina projects to step into the gate at Churchill Downs for the 1 1/8 miles Grade 3 Blame. Pioneer finished third behind Rattle N Roll and Call Me Fast in the Grade 3 Ben Ali in the last.

Albert Stall trained Masqueparade should attract betting dollars. So will Happy American, Call Me Fast, and Chess Chief.

Shawnee Stakes | Grade 3

1 1/16 miles dirt – 4 year old fillies & mares
Track: Churchill Downs | Louisville, Kentucky,
Race type: Thoroughbred – Flat racing

The two probable runners for the Grade 3 Shawnee Stakes include Gerald James trained Soul of An Angel and Brad Cox trained Idiomatic.

Although more owners will enter their horses into the Shawnee Stakes, Idiomatic should go off the chalk. The Juddmonte owned and Curlin sired runner had won 3 straight before a second-place finish behind Pass the Champagne in the Grade 2 Ruffian in the last. The Cox runner will be the horse to beat.

Arlington Stakes | Grade 3

Track: Churchill Downs | Louisville, Kentucky,
Race type: Thoroughbred – Flat racing

Brad Cox plans on saddling Set Piece, Graham Motion will enter Royal Patronage, and Kenny McPeek will put the saddle on Classic Causeway for the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes.

If only those three go, the race will be ultra-competitive. The fact owners and trainers for more top runners will try for the Arlington’s top prize, should lead to one of this weekend’s most intriguing stakes events.

Chad Brown will enter three and Todd Pletcher will enter two for the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge. Todd’s two entrants will be Sharar and Far Bridge.

Chad’s three entrants will be Congruent, Belouni, and Kalik. Charles Appleby may run Silver Knot. Others pointing to the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge include Mark Casse trained Boppy O, and Lachaise from the Jorge Abreu barn.
