Horse Racing Picks for the Top Stakes of the Weekend

Top Stakes Races for the Week

  • When: Saturday, Dec. 5 – Sunday, Dec. 6

Saturday, Dec. 5 Races

Tampa Bay Downs

  • Sandpiper Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – $100,000
  • Inaugural Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – $100,000

Both the Sandpiper and Inaugural are for 2-year-olds. The Sandpiper is for 2-year-old fillies while the Inaugural is for 2-year-old colts. Make sure to check out both. 2-year-old races this time of the year at tracks like Tampa can produce huge mutuel payouts.

Aqueduct Racetrack

  • Grade 3 Go For Wand Stakes – 1 mile dirt – $100,000

The brilliant Go For Wand passed away on the racetrack. In honor of her memory, some of the best fillies on the east coast will run in the Grade 3 Go For Wand on Saturday. The favorite should be the Todd Pletcher trained Nonna Madeline who finished third in the Grade 3 Turnback Alarm in her last. Glone Glimmering is interesting. The former claimer has 3 wins and a second in her last four.

  • Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $150,000

For 2-year-old fillies, last out maiden winner Hit the Woah, trained by Christophe Clement, could be the one sharp handicappers back. Clement is winning at 38% at the meet. Café Society, trained by Shug McGaughey, and the Todd Pletcher trained Malathaat will go off the favorites. Malathaat could be 8/5 or worse in this race.

  • Grade 2 Remsen Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $150,000

The Remsen is the first race for soon to be 3-year-olds that gives us a clue as to what horses can handle 1 ¼ miles. That’s the distance of the Kentucky Derby. The 2-year-old who are likely to test the 1 1/8 miles Remsen are Civil War, Known Agenda, Speaker’s Corner, Brooklyn Strong, Ten for Ten, and Pickin’ Time.

  • Grade 1 Cigar Mile – 1 mile dirt – $250,000

Some well-known horses will run in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile on Saturday. Firenze Fire, Mr. Buff, Mind Control, Bon Raison, King Guillermo, and True Timber will all give it a shot. The most intriguing runner could be the Phipps Stable owned and Shug trained Performer. A winner of five in a row, the Cigar Mile will be Performer’s first try in a stakes race.

Sunday, Dec. 6 Race

Aqueduct Racetrack

  • Garland of Roses Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – $100,000

Like most non-graded stakes, the Garland of Roses could produce an overlay winner. Trainers have yet to enter their horses. Make sure to check out the Garland of Roses on Sunday, though. Who knows? You could hit it big on a longshot!

Have a great week!
