Top handicap horse Accelerate is back in action at Del Mar this Saturday. Accelerate races in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, a prep for the Pacific Classic later on in the meet. Race 4 – $100,000 Allowance Optional Claimer

Race 4 is a high-end 1 mile turf event where the 6/5 morning line favorite, Vasilika, has won 4 races in a row. Dare we go after the Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly? Yes, we do! 10/1 on the morning line Barleysugar gets the rail, is 1-1-2 from 4 races at the mile distance, and has 2 wins from 5 races over Del Mar’s lawn. She’s the pick. Vasilika could very well blow these into the ocean. That’s how good she’s been racing. But, in classic Hollendorfer fashion, he doesn’t run her in a major stakes race. Is she not good enough? Also, there’s a chance she’s over the top after her last brilliant run. Still, she’s a must use in the exacta. For third, I’m going with Algorhythmic. The speedster is 0 for 3 over the Del Mar turf, but she should get a relatively easy lead in this. First: Barleysugar Second: Vasilika Third: Algorhythmic

Race 7 – Grade 2 San Diego

Accelerate isn’t a lock in the Grade 2 San Diego. The main reason is because he’s proven to be much better at 1 1/4 miles than he is at 1 1/16 miles. He’s a must use to finish up the exacta. But, I can’t put him on top. The horse I like is the Bob Baffert trained Dr. Dorr. The Grade 2 Suburban run was a flop as Dr. Dorr didn’t appreciate the track at all. He held on to finish second in the Gold Cup, though, after easily winning the Grade 2 Californian. Back in California, Dr. Dorr should show his best. Like I wrote above, Accelerate should finish no worse than second in this race. He’s the class of the field, no doubt. If his form holds throughout the summer, he’ll be a legit contender to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic this fall. Third place could go to undefeated Catalina Cruiser. The 4-year-old has only raced at 6 furlongs. That’s why it’s hard to see him beating this crew in his first race around two turns. It’s not hard to see him finishing in the trifecta. First: Dr. Dorr Second: Accelerate Third: Catalina Cruiser

Race 8 – Grade 2 San Clemente

This 1 mile turf race appears to have a ton of speed. The favorites are all front runners. Why not take a shot on 20/1 morning line longshot Dulce Ride? Winning a Grade 2 after breaking a maiden is super rare. But, Dulce Ride’s sire is Candy Ride, who produces stakes winners on both turf and dirt. Not only that, Dulce Ride should get an excellent trip under great California jockey Rafael Bejarano. West Palm Beach went off at 70 cents on the dollar to win the Grade 3 Senorita at a mile over the turf. She didn’t. Now, she’s offering 6/1 odds to win the Grade 2 San Clemente. There’s no reason to believe the closer doesn’t get the perfect pace set up in this. Phil D’Amato trained Rockin Ready is another offering odds. She broke her maiden at a mile over the turf. Because she breaks from post-position 1, Rockin Ready should get first jump on Dulce Ride and West Palm Beach. That makes her a win candidate.
