Churchill Downs Picks for Friday, May 29

Race 6 – 1:30 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $81,000 Allowance

Jockey Jose Ortiz and trainer Kenny McPeek could have the winner in Race 6 on Friday. Envoutante broke her maiden like a stakes horse. McPeek sent her to the turf for a try in the $75,000 Honey Ryder in her first against winners. She finished fourth after setting the pace. The return to dirt could be all this talented filly needs to get her second lifetime win.

Dreamalildreamofu offered 7/2 odds in her first against winners. That was an $80,000 optional claimer at Oaklawn Park. She ran well to finish third behind a next out winner. The Brad Cox trained miss should get a nice setup in this. Consider for the win if you aren’t sold on Envoutante.

Steve Asmussen trained Strong Flag finished second and ahead of Dreamalildreamofu in that Oaklawn race. Flag bounced after that, finishing sixth by 9 lengths in the $80,000 Gardenia Stakes. We believe in the Strong Mandate sired runner, but she might need a recoup race before showing her best.

  • Win: Envoutante
  • Place: Dreamalildreamofu
  • Show: Strong Flag

Race 7 – 4:40 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Corey Lanerie rides 5/1 on the morning line Manny Wah for the second time in this. Corey got a lot out of the Grade 1 Malibu third-place finisher. Wah made a huge move up the rail to finish third behind Whitmore and Flagstaff in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Handicap. This a major drop in class. That 5/1 morning line also attracts.

Hog Creek Hustle has a couple of wins and a second from 3 races at the 7 furlong distance. Like Manny Wah, Hustle drops into this from the Count Fleet Handicap. Although the 4-year-old colt failed to hit the board in the Count Fleet, that was at 6 furlongs. Hustle could improve big time going back to 7 furlongs.

George Arnold trained Borracho ran awful in the colt’s first race since 2019. The Uncle Mo sired 4-year-old’s performance reflected the close to 20/1 odds. Borracho should improve big time. A sweet work on May 21, 5 furlongs in a minute, implies this tough runner can get into the trifecta.

  • Win: Manny Wah
  • Place: Hog Creek Hustle
  • Show: Borracho

Race 8 – 4:40 pm ET – 5 Furlongs Turf – $88,000 Allowance

Leinstar had no shot in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Go back a race, though, and we can see that when George Arnold has this runner ready, Leinstar is tough to beat. Leinstar finished second in that event at Keeneland, the Grade 2 Woodford Reserve. Overall, the top choice has 3 wins and a second from 5 races at the distance.

Extravagant Kid, who breaks to the outside of Leinstar, has a 6-6-3 record from 19 races at the distance. Kid is equally adept on both turf and dirt. If this race washes off the lawn, Extravagant Kid shouldn’t scratch.

George Arnold’s other runner, Totally Boss, might go off the chalk. Like Leinstar, Boss failed to hit the board in the BC Turf Sprint. There’s no shame in that. Also like Leinstar, Totally Boss has a great record at the distance with 4 wins, a second, and a third from 8 races. Use on top if you don’t mind the low odds.

  • Win: Leinstar
  • Place: Extravagant Kid
  • Show: Totally Boss
