Fonner Park Picks for Tuesday, May 5

Race 2 – 5:27 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $7,700 Allowance

4-year-old Creed’s Revenge broke its maiden on March 25. The Schuyler Condon trained gelding showed great early speed in its first against winners when finishing third. The Beggarthyneighbor sired gelding should improve off the effort. Jockey Francisco Arrieta figures to get a nice trip from the outside.

Trainer David Anderson saddles 2/1 choice Mr. Big Shot in the second. The Skipshot gelding broke its maiden on April 6. This one takes a drop in class from a state-bred $31,000 stakes race to this low-level allowance. Mr. Big Shot has a real chance to complete the exacta.

Jockey Armando Martinez hopes to take Want to Be Cowboy gate-to-wire. The 4-year-old gelding looked great when breaking it’s maiden in its first lifetime race. Cowboy could surprise. But the gelding isn’t bred to get the distance while there’s other speed in this.

  • Win: Creed’s Revenge
  • Place: Mr. Big Shot
  • Show: Want to Be Cowboy

Race 3 – 5:54 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $5,000 Claiming

This race could set up for 7/2 on the morning line Spunky Kitten. The Mark Lemburg trained; Kitten’s Joy 4-year-old gelding has a nice 1-2-1 record from 5 chances at Fonner. Spunky Kitten figures to get the right pace setup because Captain Amante and Auctioneer will go right to the front.

Witts Hurricane will also benefit from a hot pace. The Jerry Gourneau trainee finished in a dead heat with Captain Amante in its last. Gourneau is just 6% winners with his last out maiden runners. But this one has talent and the rest of the field, after Spunky Kitten and Captain Amante, leaves much to be desired.

Captain Amante gets the rail for its first against winners. If Auctioneer doesn’t break well, the Mark Hibon trained gelding could go gate-to-wire. Consider if the 5/2 morning line drifts higher.

  • Win: Spunky Kitten
  • Place: Witts Hurricane
  • Show: Captain Amante

Race 7 – 7:42 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $7,100 Starter Allowance

7/2 on the morning line A Bunch for Lunch tries to make it three straight. Trainer John Ness takes a last out winner’s next race 26% of the time. A Bunch for Lunch dominated $5,000 claimers by 4 ¼ lengths on April 13. Francisco Arrieta rides.

Trainer Salvador Arceo wins 18% at Fonner. His entrant in the seventh on Tuesday, Classy and Fast, should get the lead. If no other jockey challenges Armando Martinez early, the 23% winning rider could nurse Classy and Fast to a front-running score. Consider in an exacta box with A Bunch for Lunch.

Matapan just ran on April 29. The 4-year-old filly finished second in the $16,000 Al Swihart Memorial Stakes. She could score the win on Tuesday. But horseplayers like to over bet trainer Isai Gonzalez’s horses. Also, there’s a chance Matapan bounces off the Al Swihart Memorial performance.

  • Win: A Bunch for Lunch
  • Place: Classy and Fast
  • Show: Matapan
