Often, the day before the Florida Derby, Gulfstream runs a couple of stakes races. Because of the pandemic, the Florida track decided to shelve that idea. Instead, it’s turf race heaven at the Gulf on Friday. We pulled out a couple of the top turf races to make picks for. The other? That’s a huge $75K Allowance Optional Claimer on the dirt. Horse Racing Picks for Gulfstream Park on March 27

Race 9 – 5:12 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – Allowance OC $75,000

Todd Pletcher, one of the top 3-year-old trainers in the world, has decided to take his time with his Derby horses. Churchill Downs switched the Kentucky Derby to September, which is why Todd entered Money Moves into this race. The Candy Ride colt easily won his maiden. Pletcher is 25% winners with his first out maiden horses while Luis Saez sticks. Luis can take the lead out of the gate or sit and pounce.

Pletcher could go 1-2 in this. Silver Ratio has something that many of his rivals don’t. After breaking his maiden, the $320K purchase raced in a 7-furlong allowance, finishing third after going off the favorite. If Ratio learned anything, he could take home the win on Friday.

Edge of Fire hasn’t run since February. This equine is as classy as it gets. Curlin on top and a Tapit mare on the bottom says this dude can run. He did in his first lifetime race, winning by 2 lengths. The works are great and James Jerkens can get them ready off the bench.

  • Win: Money Moves
  • Place: Silver Ratio
  • Show: Edge of Fire

Race 10 – 5:43 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Turf – Allowance OC $62,500

It took Silver Kitten 8 races to break her maiden. No worries. Since breaking her maiden, the 4-year-old filly has a win and a second-place finish. The light bulb went off while trainer Danny Gargan has won 30% of his races at this meet. The morning line chalk gets Luis Saez to ride and there’s no other speed. SK can take this gate-to-wire.

Edgar Prado jumps aboard 6/1 on the morning line Bienville Street. The 5-year-old mare runs after a much needed vacation. Street has a sweet 3-2-3 record from 15 races over Gulfstream’s lawn. The works aren’t great but this mare is a pro. If she’s relaxed and rested, she could get into the exacta.

Master turf trainer Chad Brown saddles Bacchanalia. The 4-year-old filly has won her last couple of races, a maiden at Belmont and an allowance at Gulfstream. But because Chad trains her, we’re dreaming if she keeps her 3/1 Horse Racing Odds morning line. She’s a must use in the tri and super. Put her in the exacta if you don’t mind a low payout.

  • Win: Silver Kitten
  • Place: Bienville Street
  • Show: Bacchanalia

Race 11 – 6:14 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Turf – Allowance OC $75,000

If Mystic Lancelot keeps his 6/1 Horse Racing Odds morning line odds, we should be all over him like white on rice. Todd Pletcher has yet to race the Into Mischief sired colt at anything longer than a mile. Jockey Javier Castellano should put Lancelot into a nice position out of the gate. This one has a big shot to get the win money. Let’s cross our fingers and hope the 6/1 odds hold.

Ask for Bode won at first asking taking a 1-mile turf race at the maiden claiming $75K level. Trainer Eddie Keneally wins 15% with his first out maiden winners. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione could either rate off Unconquered Lea or press that one. Either way, Tyler’s got a few options.

Trainer Ignacio Correas wins with just 9% with runners that broke their maiden in their last, which is why it’s tough to put Buy Me Candy on top. The Candy Ride 3-year-old broke his maiden by 2 ½ lengths in a maiden special weight at the Fair Grounds over the turf in his last. He could improve and challenge for the win. But it feels like he’s a cut below Lancelot and Bode.

  • Win: Mystic Lancelot
  • Place: Ask for Bode
  • Show: Buy Me Candy
