Gulfstream Park Picks for Saturday, May 30

Race 8 – 4:21 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $50,000 Starter Optional Claiming

Jockey Samy Camacho steps aboard Blood Moon in the eighth. Camacho has won 19% this year. He should have no trouble putting Moon into contention. Trainer Danny Gargan is winning at 32% at the meet while even though this one has never tried the turf, he’s certainly bred to love the lawn.

Mike Maker trained Let’s Play Hardball could make it back-to-back victories. The Constitution sired 3-year-old gelding broke it’s maiden at the $75,000 claiming level in it’s last. Maker wins 20% with his last out maiden winners while this one ran a fast enough race over the grass to beat these.

Gargan also trains the chalk, Venezuelan Hug. Although this one offers 9/5 on the morning line, it’s hard to understand why the 3-year-old colt is favored over Blood Moon. We’ll use in the bottom and top of our exotics because Danny seems to win with everything.

  • Win: Blood Moon
  • Place: Let’s Play Hardball
  • Show: Venezuelan Hug

Race 9  – 4:52 pm ET – 6 ½ Furlongs Dirt –$35,000 Claiming

Whenever trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. drops a runner, we had better pay attention. Saffie drops Yodel E. A. Who from $50,000 claimers to this $35,000 claiming race. Just this past February, Yodel finished second in a stakes race. We’ll get excited if this one keeps the 4/1 morning line odds.

Cajun Firecracker goes first time for trainer Mike Maker. Firecracker has a 2-0-1 record from 5 races over Gulfstream’s dirt. Paco Lopez’s presence ensures that the Maker runner doesn’t lose touch with the field.

Win With Pride is the 2/1 morning line chalk. Todd Pletcher wins 44% first after the claim. That’s from just 9 claims, though. The 6-year-old Distorted Humor gelding could take this. Be ready to swallow low odds, though, because the gelding races from Todd’s barn.

  • Win: Yodel E. A. Who
  • Place: Cajun Firecracker
  • Show: Win With Pride

Race 10 – 5:24 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Turf – $75,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Talking deserves consideration for the win slot. Trainer Jonathan Thomas excels with these type of grass runners. More importantly? Jonathan sends this one back to the lawn after it raced on the all-weather. That’s a 50% winning move. Thomas wins 30% with horses coming off a layoff.

No way Express Pharoah keeps the 12/1 morning line odds. The American Pharoah sired 3-year-old colt broke its maiden over the turf. In its first race against winners, it bumped and steadied at the top of the stretch. If not for steadying, this one may have won.

We can’t leave George Weaver trained Our Country from the trifecta. Weaver has won 27% this year. He’s won 30% at Gulfstream. Also, this runner is newly gelded, which could move it up a few lengths.

  • Win: Talking
  • Place: Express Pharoah
  • Show: Our Country
