Horse Racing Betting Preview 2018 Preakness Stakes

Written by on May 15, 2018

Winning the Triple Crown is one of the greatest sporting achievements in the world. In 142 years, only 12 horses have managed the feat, and it is the close proximity of all three races that make it so tough. Thoroughbreds simply do not race this regularly in normal circumstances, which may explain why the horse racing betting field for the 143rd Preakness Stakes is so small. Justify delivered a performance for the ages at the Kentucky Derby, prompting owners and trainers to skip this race and save their horses for the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, in a couple of weeks. The question now is whether any of the 7 other horses in the field at Pimlico this coming Saturday, May 19 have what it takes to upset the Derby winner at the latest Preakness Stakes Odds.

Post Positions for the Preakness Stakes

The post position draw for the Preakness Stakes will be held this Wednesday, May 16 at 5 PM EST on the NBC Sports website. While the draw for post positions is usually a big deal in these races, the fact that we have such a small field means that it really isn’t that big a deal. With just 8 horses, and possibly even less, set to go on Saturday, there should be no issues with each horse getting into the spot that best suits their individual running styles. The small field would make you assume that Justify is an absolute certainty to add another jewel to the Triple Crown, but the Preakness Stakes has proven to be something of a giant killer over the years. This will be the 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes, and over the years, only 23 horses have won the Derby and the Preakness. 12 of those horses went on to a Triple Crown, while the other 11 fell at the final hurdle at the Belmont Stakes. Justify is undoubtedly the horse to beat this coming Saturday, but there are a couple of others in there who may be able to spring yet another Preakness Stakes upset.

The Field for the Preakness Stakes

As it stands at the moment, we are going to have a field of 8 at the Preakness, although there are still a couple of horses who may be scratched. Justify is the favorite by a long way, with Good Magic, who had a great run at the Kentucky Derby, in as the second favorite. Quip is next up in the betting odds, and he is a horse that I believe could be very dangerous, given that he has blazing early speed. Once again, Justify is the Horse Racing Betting favorite to win the 2018 Preakness Stakes. The odds drop off quite dramatically after those three, with Sporting Chance, Bravazo, Diamond King, Tenfold, and Lone Sailor all sure to go off at very long odds. The good news is that if one of those big price horses can get in the money, the payouts are going to climb dramatically. We have a ton of coverage still to come for the Preakness Stakes on May 19, so be sure to check back regularly. We will take a closer look at the Horse Racing Betting favorites, and we will also make our picks, which includes exotics wagers that you should consider.
