Oaklawn Park Picks for Saturday, April 11

Race 9 – 5:43 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $150,000 Oaklawn Mile Stakes

The Oaklawn Mile Stakes appears to set up for 4/1 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds Mr. Money. The Brett Calhoun trained and Goldencents sired 4-year-old hasn’t raced since a seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Jockey Gabriel Saez should place Mr. Money right behind front runners Slick Silver, Pioneer Spirit, and Home Run Trick. Stalk and pounce to the win.

Steve Asmussen trained Snapper Sinclair figures to hang out with Mr. Money behind the speed. A winner of over $1.23 million, the City Zip runner should appreciate the cut back in distance from 1 1/16 miles to a mile. Asmussen enters sprinter Boldor to ensure the right setup for this one.

No doubt, Tom’s d’Etat is the class of the race. But the Grade 1 Clark winner might prefer longer. We’ll relegate to third knowing the chalk could blow us out of cashing anything.

  • Win: Mr. Money
  • Place: Snapper Sinclair
  • Show: Tom’s d’Etat

Race 11 – 6:48 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Dirt – $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes

Sir Rick has 4 wins from 6 races and goes for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Sure, the Paynter sired runner faces more well-known 3-year-olds in this, but Diodoro has torn it up at Oaklawn Park. Also, Sir Rick could get a relatively easy lead because so many jockeys will be afraid of pushing the button early going 1 1/8 miles.

Richard Baltas trained Taishan could be one of the few horses that pushes Sir Rick. Taishan won an $80K optional claimer at Oaklawn over the slop in his last. If Sir Rick isn’t at his best, Taishan could be the one that goes gate-to-wire. Consider for win honors.

After Digital finished fifth in the Grade 2 Risen Star, trainer Brett Calhoun sent him to the bench. The Into Mischief runner has worked well for his return to racing. Digital should get a nice trip behind Taishan and Sir Rick. He’s another with a shot to get the victory.

  • Win: Sir Rick
  • Place: Taishan
  • Show: Digital

Race 12 – 7:19 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $50,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Jockey Joel Rosario has 2 wins and 3 seconds from 9 races at the this meet. He rides 9/2 morning line choice Popular Kid for trainer Jason Barkley in Race 12. Rosario will ensure Kid’s in an excellent position to grab the win as they turn for home. If nobody wants the lead, Joel will take it. That versatility under Rosario is the real reason Popular Kid gets the nod.

Exulting drops from graded stakes races to this $50K claimer. No doubt, the Mike Maker runner deserves respect. But Maker wants someone to claim the 7-year-old gelding. Why else put this one up for sale in an allowance optional claiming race? Hard to endorse for win honors, but can’t keep out of the exacta, either.

Brad Cox trains 8/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds Cashanova. The Twirling Candy 4-year-old faces a tough pace setup since Rosario aboard Popular Kid will get the jump. But jockey Joe Talamo is one of the top riders at Oaklawn. He could put Cashanova in position for the win. Consider on top, middle, and bottom of the exotics.

  • Win: Popular Kid
  • Place: Exulting
  • Show: Cashanova
