With the 141st Kentucky Derby taking place on Saturday, May 2, a lot of attention will be on the online betting favorites, particularly American Pharoah who many expect to be victorious in the race. A win by Pharoah will be the third consecutive win by an outright favorite, but going by history, the chances of that happening are pretty low. Before California Chrome and Orb won the Derby in consecutive years, there were only four favorites that have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby since 1979, and with this year being so deep, some of the underdogs have as good a chance as any of the favorites to win the race. Realistically, a horse like Mr Z –currently listed at the bottom with 50-1 odds to win the race– doesn’t really have a chance to win, but there are others who currently aren’t given much of a chance that can pull off the upset. Here is a look at some of our online betting favorite dark horses for this year’s Kentucky Derby.

A Brief Look at Our Favorite Darkhorses for Kentucky Derby Betting Lines

The odds of Frosted winning the Derby are currently 14-1, but could end up winning it if things go right for him. He is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, who has had some success in Triple Crown races winning the 2006 Belmont Stakes with Jazil and following it up with a Breeders’ Cup win with Invasor. Yet, McLaughlin is still looking for his first win at the Derby and has a decent chance with Frosted, whose odds dropped because of his performance in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, a race he was about to win before stopping inexplicably to a walk. The performance prompted the hiring of Joel Rosario to be his jockey. Rosario won the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb and rode Frosted to his first win in four races earlier this month at the Wood Memorial.

Firing Line

Like Frosted, Firing Line is also at 14-1 odds, but his recent performances make him a dark horse to watch out for. Before his last race, Firing Line finished second to Dortmund in their two previous matches by very narrow margins. He then went to New Mexico, where he dominated his most recent race at the Sunland Derby in a 141/4 length win. Firing Line seems to be hitting his stride at the right moment and should provide a tough challenge for Dortmund and the other favorites, and if fortunate enough, maybe win the race.

International Star

At 16-1 odds, International Star is not getting a lot of love from handicappers. Still, he has been a very reliable horse and is more than capable of winning the race. International Star has won four of his last five races and finished fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club race in Churchill Downs in November. He is sired by Fusaichi Pegasus, the winner of the 2000 Kentucky Derby, and under the right circumstances, this racehorse could go all the way like his dad.

Mubtaahij has recently become one of the favorite dark horses to win this race. At 9-1, he has the fourth best odds to win, but like the rest of the underdogs, he is getting overlooked by most people thanks to American Pharoah and Dortmund. Another reason why bettors are overlooking him is because he has been racing in Dubai for most of the winter and doesn’t have any races on American soil. But horse racing fans should consider he is a very big and strong horse that loves the dirt, giving him a good chance to win the race.
