No player gets a nom for Cooperstown

For a player to get into the Hall, he must attract at least 75.5% of the vote. For the first time since 2013, no player got enough of the vote to make it to Cooperstown.

Curt Schilling, who’s no stranger to controversy, got the closest. Schilling gained 71.1% of the vote. After announcing Schilling didn’t get enough of the vote to make it to the hall of fame, some screamed, “Conspiracy!”

Schilling made a few offensive comments on Twitter and that, more than anything else conspiracists say, is why Schilling won’t get a bust .

Stats support the conspiracy thesis. The former Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks player is a 6-time All-Star, a 3-time World Series Champion, a Roberto Clemente Award winner, and posts a lifetime 3.46 ERA.

Conspiracy theories aside, Schilling got incredibly close. He got 70% of the vote last year. He got 71.1% of the vote this year. Schilling will get there if he remains on the ballot. The pitcher said after the snub that he wants to be removed from the ballot, though. If he gets his wish, he’ll neve get to the Hall.

Phillies resign J.T. Realmuto while Jays get serious and sign Springer and Semien

Two of the top four free agents signed contracts this past week. We’ll start with J.T. Realmuto, who resigned with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies had no choice. Without Realmuto, whom most regard as the best catcher in baseball, they’d have fallen even further behind Atlanta and the New York Mets in the deep NL East. Even the Washington Nationals made a few moves this offseason to get into contention for the division title.

Unlike the Phillies, the Blue Jays didn’t have to sign George Springer. But Toronto wants to win a World Series. The 2020 playoff team adds Springer to a line-up that now includes second baseman Marcus Siemian.

The Jays handed Siemian an $18 million deal. If Hyun-Jin Ryu and the rest of the rotation holds up, Toronto can upset the Yankees and win the AL East.

Bauer remains the lone Big 4 free agent available

With Realmuto and Springer signing contracts and DJ LeMahieu resigning with the Yankees a couple of weeks ago, the lone remaining free agent among the Big 4 without a team is NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer.

Nobody knows what Trevor is thinking. The current Cincinnati Reds pitcher could decide to stay with the team that rejuvenated his career. Or he could go to Los Angeles and play for the Dodgers

He could head to the Bay Area to throw for the San Francisco Giants. There’s even talk that Bauer wants back in the AL. No matter where he ends up, he’ll perform well, no doubt. The big question is whether teams are willing to give Bauer and his reps everything they’re asking for.
