Marlins hire first female GM, Kim Ng

Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter made history in 2017 when he became the first black CEO in Major League Baseball. Jeter made history again last week when he hired the first female GM in the sport.

Jeter decided that Kim Ng is the person to lead the Marlins into the 2021 season. Ng has vast MLB experience. She was assistant general manager for both the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. Before taking the job with the Marlins, Ng was MLB’s senior vice president of baseball operations.

The Marlins’ new general manger must hit the ground running. Even though the Marlins made the playoffs, Miami has the lowest payroll of any MLB team. If they wish to compete, Jeter and Marlins’ ownership must allow Ng to make some moves.

Freddie Freeman wins NL MVP

Although the Atlanta Braves fell short in their World Series hopes, Freddie Freeman easily won the National League Most Valuable Player Award after receiving 28-of-30 first place votes. Freeman beat out Mookie Betts who got the other two first place votes.

How did Freeman grab the MVP? He batted .341 with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs. He also had a mind-boggling 1.102 OPS. Some will questions whether baseball should have handed out any awards after a 60-game season.

We’re not. Freddie has been a great player for years. It’s nice that someone finally noticed.

Jose Abreu wins AL MVP

At one time, some baseball historians were comparing Jose Abreu to the greats. The 33-year-old 3 time all-star finally put together a Most Valuable Player award season. Abreu didn’t produce a better than 1.00 OPS like Freeman did.

He had more RBIs than Freddie, 60 to 53, batted .317, and hit 19 home runs. Jose notched 21-of-37 first place votes. He got 394 points to easily beat the nearest competitor. Abreu called winning the MVP a special moment.

The White Sox were one of the surprise teams this season. If they can find consistency next season over 162 games, like they did over 60, Abreu could be on a team that will challenge for the AL pennant.

Everyone is wondering where Trevor Bauer is headed

Where is NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer headed? That’s the main question on most everyone’s lips.

Bauer ended the season with a 1.73 ERA. He held opposing batters to a .173 average. Trevor pretty much has his pick of teams since he’s a free agent.

The New York Yankees, White Sox, and Blue Jays are at the top of the list. Bauer may want to stay in the National League, though, which means the Dodgers, Padres and Braves have a shot. Wherever Trevor ends up, you know the team will be crazy excited to have him.

Have a great week!
