The AL West has proven to be a bit of an online betting surprise package to this point in the season, as no-one really expected the Houston Astros to dominate in the way that they have. The 4-game lead that the Astros have built up to this point is nice, but going post to post is going to be tough for a team that is not brandishing a lot of power. The Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels, who will play he 3rd of a 3-game series on Thursday afternoon, are likely to be hot on the heels of the Astros all year.

Adrian Beltre sends $300 invoice to Angels pitcher after three broken bats in one game. http://t.co/BeFTksN2HF pic.twitter.com/X24HnafT1G — USA TODAY Sports (@USATODAYsports) April 27, 2015The Los Angeles Angels (9-11) were expected to be one of the favorites to win the division this year, but they have far too many guys underperforming right now. Mike Trout is really the only one living up to the hype, as the Angels have no less than 6 of their regular starters hitting just .222 or less. They need to get these guys back on track, and fast, if they want to hang around for the long haul. On the bright side, the Angels have been pretty good defensively, and if they can get the bats going, they could still end up mounting a formidable challenge. They didn’t get off to the best of starts in this series, dropping the first game 6-2. Thursday’s game will feature Garrett Richards (1-1, 3.75 ERA) on the mound for the Angels. Richards is a hard thrower, and he looked pretty dominant in his last outing versus the Rangers. The biggest problem that the A’s (9-12) have faced all season is consistency. They have been unable to put together any sort of winning streak to this point, and were able to break up a 4-game losing skid with their win against the Angels on Tuesday. The A’s are a team that are capable of scoring runs (102 so far), and who have been getting incredible pithing efforts from Scott Kazmir and Sonny Gray, so it’s something of a surprise to see them in the position they are in right now. Jesse Chavez, who started the season in the bullpen, will get his second start of the season on Thursday. His last start was against these same Angels last week, where he was very unlucky to take the loss in a game the LA won 2-0.
