Why Bet on Los Angeles?

The Angels probably were glad they were off Monday as they are on a season-high five-game skid following an 11-10 home loss vs. Toronto on Sunday. Taylor Ward went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, an RBI double, and a walk in the loss. Ward hit a 414-foot two-run home run off of Ryan Borucki in the bottom of the fourth and in the bottom of the sixth, he hit a 106.4 mph double to left field, extending the Angels’ lead. Ward has been stellar this season, slashing .359/.472/.709 with a career-high 10 home runs and a stolen base across 142 plate appearances.

Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-3 with two home runs in Sunday’s loss. Ohtani hit a 108.8 mph solo home run off of Jose Berrios in the bottom of the first and in the bottom of the third, he launched a 425-foot two-run home run over the center-field wall. It was his third multi-home run game of the season.

Catcher Max Stassi went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI Sunday. Stassi’s two-run single tied the game at 6-6 in the third inning, and he added a solo shot in the seventh for the Angels’ last run. Sunday’s big game gave the catcher three multi-hit efforts in his last five contests since returning from the COVID-19 injured list. He’s up to a .250/.330/.417 slash line with four homers, 11 RBIs, 14 runs scored and a pair of doubles through 24 games this season.

It’s big right-hander Noah Syndergaard (3-1) on the mound Tuesday. Syndergaard turned in his best start of the 2022 season, allowing just one run on four hits over eight innings in last Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Rangers. Syndergaard managed just two outs against the Rangers in his previous start, but he came out with a strong determined effort in Tuesday’s rematch. He was working a shutout through seven frames before Jonah Heim snapped the spell with a homer to lead off the eighth inning. Syndergaard struck out five without walking a batter during his time on the mound. He has a 3.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 27/8 K/BB ratio (38 innings; seven starts).

In two career starts against the Yankees, Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA (11 IP – 6 ER) and 12 strikeouts. His only previous start at Yankee Stadium came on July 20, 2018 for Mets (W; 5 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO). This season, is 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA (24.1 IP – 4 ER) at home, but is 1-2 with a 5.93 ERA (13.2 IP – 9 ER) on the road.

Last season, Halos went 4-3 against the Yankees, marking first season series win since 2017.

The Yanks enter off a 4-2 loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday, their second straight defeat. Aaron Hicks went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Hicks went hitless in his return to the Yankees’ lineup after missing three straight games due to right hamstring tightness. The 32-year-old outfielder has struggled to get going at the plate this season, hitting .200/.326/.233 with one homer and five steals across 145 plate appearances.

Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 and hit his 18th homer Sunday. Judge had gone five straight games without homering, but even so, he leads the majors by four after hitting No. 18 today off Colin Poche. Thirteen of those have been solo shots.

Infielder Gleyber Torres has been getting treatment for a wrist issue, but it’s not keeping him out of games. Torres has been wearing a wrap on his wrist in addition to receiving ice treatment after games, but it hasn’t impacted his performance at the plate. In fact, the infielder is in the midst of his best hitting stretch of the season, going 7-for-24 with four homers over his past six contests. Yankees manager Aaron Boone clarified Sunday that the wrist issue isn’t a major concern. Torres went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in Sunday’s loss.

It’s lefty Jordan Montgomery (0-1, 3.30 ERA) on the mound. Montgomery took a no-decision against the Orioles last Tuesday, yielding two runs in six-plus frames as the Yankees won 7-6 in 11 innings. Yet another no-decision for Montgomery, who is somehow still looking for his first win. He was pulled after serving up a solo shot to Austin Hays to lead off the seventh, and he watched helplessly as Michael King gave up a game-tying three-run blast later in the frame.

Montgomery has allowed 3 runs-or-fewer in each of his nine starts this season and 2R-or-fewer in seven of those starts. He has not walked a batter in each of his last two starts and five of his last six starts since 4/27, allowing just 3BB total in that span (32.0IP).

When you can’t blow hitters away with an upper-90s fastball, you have to succeed in different ways. For Montgomery, it’s come by the use of his off-speed pitchers, mainly his changeup and curveball. Since the start of 2020, his changeup has an impressive 38.6% whiff rate and .239 weighted on-base average allowed (wOBA).
