The Sox enter this series off splitting a four-game home weekend set vs. Seattle. Catcher Christian Arroyo was hit by a pitch during the first inning of Sunday’s game. He kept playing but did have X-rays after, which were negative. He has been swinging a hot bat for the Red Sox, slashing .296/.345/.426 with six runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base in 58 plate appearances.

Outfielder Alex Verdugo experienced a tight left hamstring during Saturday’s game and was then held out on Sunday due to the field conditions being wet. Manager Alex Cora indicated after Sunday’s game that Verdugo may not return to the starting lineup until Wednesday.

J.D. Martinez leads the majors in RBI (21), XBH (15), and total bases (57), and is tied for the lead in HR (7). He also ranks in the top 3 in SLG (3rd, .731), OPS (3rd, 1.163), hits (T-2nd, 28), and doubles (T-2nd, 8). However, with no DH in this series he will be sitting.

Closer Matt Barnes slammed the door against the Mariners on Sunday, preserving a two-run lead in the ninth inning to collect his fourth save of the season. The 30-year-old righty has been great good to open the 2021 campaign allowing four runs on five hits with a 20/3 K/BB ratio across 12 innings of work.

It’s Garrett Richards (0-2, 6.48) on the mound here. He surrendered four runs on four hits and six walks with two strikeouts last Wednesday in a loss against the Blue Jays. Richards could not find the strike zone as he threw only 48-of-92 pitches for strikes and issued six free passes. Only one run would score in the first before the Blue Jays put three runs on the board against Richards in the second.

This will be his first time facing the Mets in his 11-year Major League career. Among pitchers with at least 750.0 IP since the start of 2011, his average 4-seam fastball velocity of 96.0 mph ranks 6th in the majors. Red Sox pitchers have allowed only 8 HR in their last 14 games. They have surrendered the fewest HR/9.0 IP in the majors this season (0.65).

Why Bet on NY Mets? | MLB Betting Odds

New York took two of three at home vs. the Nationals over the weekend. New York is 6-2 at Citi Field and have combined for a 1.83 ERA (14 ER/69.0 IP) at home. New York’s starting pitchers have a 2.70 ERA (28 ER/93.1 IP) this season.

In Sunday’s 4-0 win, Miguel Castro struck out Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Bell to escape a two-on jam in the eighth, and Edwin Diaz finished the five-hitter with a perfect ninth for the Mets’ second shutout of the series and third this season. Diaz has not allowed an earned run in his last six appearances (6.1 IP).

J.D. Davis went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI on Sunday. Davis put the Mets on the board early with a two-run shot in the first inning off of Patrick Corbin. He later singled to start off the fourth inning and came home to score on a single by James McCann. Davis added a third base hit in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old third baseman is off to a hot start, hitting .414 with two home runs through just 33 plate appearances.

Pete Alonso went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two walks Sunday. Alonso launched his fifth homer of the season in the fifth inning off Patrick Corbin, and the slugger has gone deep three times over his last five games. He also extended his hitting streak to five games, a span in which he’s racked up three homers, five RBI, four walks and four runs scored. Alonso has 74 home runs since he entered the league in 2019. That is the highest total in the majors in that span. Alonso already ranks 27th on the Mets’ all-time list.

It’s lefty David Peterson (1-5, 6.75) here, and he will get another crack at the Red Sox, the team that drafted him out of high school in the 28th round in 2014. The left-hander beat Boston in his big-league debut at Fenway Park last July 28, calling it “one of the greatest days of my life.”

Peterson’s last time out on the mound was at Wrigley Field against the Cubs on April 21. He pitched 3.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits. He came away with three strikeouts and issued two free. Peterson cruised through the first three innings. Unfortunately, he never made it out of the fourth, thanks to two errors, including a crucial J.D. Davis miscue, that helped prolong the inning. The Mets lost 16-4.  The Mets have allowed 16 unearned runs this season, which is the second-most in the majors.
