The Cincinnati Reds are scuffling a bit, especially their pitching staff. Things get no easier on Monday night when the Reds visit the loaded Los Angeles Dodgers, who are favored on the MLB odds to repeat as World Series champions.

Series History

These teams haven’t played since 2019 when the Dodgers won five of the six games. In their most recent appearance in LA, in April 2019, the Reds were swept by the Dodgers for the first time since 2017. In 2018, the Reds won the first 6 games of the 7-game season series vs the Dodgers, including all 4 games at Dodger Stadium. It was Cincy’s longest single-season winning streak vs the Dodgers since a 7-game winning streak from 5/30-8/8, 1976.

The Reds remain without third baseman Mike Moustakas as he’s on the injured list with an illness – not COVID related. He could be activated at some point in this series but not expected before Tuesday. Moustakas was hitting .289/.404/.553 with a pair of homers and five RBI through 47 plate appearances. The team has really struggled without him.

Since Moustakas left the lineup, the Reds have gone from averaging 6.25 runs per game to 5.00 runs per game. The Reds have run out Kyle Farmer and Alex Blandino in Moose’s absence, and while both are quality utility infielders, neither is going to provide the same level of production and leadership that this team receives from Moustakas.

It’s right-hander Tyler Mahle (1-1, 1.74) on the mound here.  Mahle fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings last Wednesday vs. Arizona but didn’t factor into the decision. Reliever Amir Garrett struggled to find the strike zone and gave up a three-run homer in the ninth to prevent Mahle from the win. He allowed just two hits and two walks, and he struck out nine.

Using a fastball that often touches 96 mph, Mahle is on the best roll of his young career. In 20 2/3 innings, he has given up nine hits and nine walks with 31 strikeouts.

“He’s taking really big steps from the last month of last season, offseason, Spring Training and then leading into this year. He keeps getting better,” Manager David Bell said. “He’s very talented and has a great fastball. He’s developed his other pitches to go with it. It’s all coming together for him right now.”

Mahle graduated from Westminster High School in Southern California and grew up a Dodgers fan. Left-handed batters are 3-for-43 (.070, 6bb, 20k, all singles) off him this season and right-handed batters 6-for-26 (.231, 1 2b, 2hr, 4rbi, 3bb, 11k). Mahle is 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three career outings vs. LA.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers? | MLB Betting Odds

L.A. is without second baseman Gavin Lux and former NL MVP Cody Bellinger. Lux, dealing with a wrist injury, could be activated any day now. Bellinger is currently on the shelf after an MRI revealed a hairline fracture in his left fibula so he won’t play Monday. Bellinger was injured April 5 when Athletics reliever Reymin Guduan inadvertently spiked him at first base in Oakland.

“I can’t really do much until the bone heals, which depends on each person,” Bellinger said. “But once that bone heals up, what I’ve been told is you’re ready to go from there.”

It’s lefty Julio Urias (3-0, 2.81) on the mound for Los Angeles. Urias tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ 1-0 defeat of the Mariners last Tuesday. Urias yielded just one hit — a harmless two-out single to Mitch Haniger in the bottom of the third — as he needed just 88 pitches through seven innings. He also issued only one walk, and that was in the first inning to Kyle Lewis.

Including the 2020 postseason, Urias unbeaten his last 21 games (16 starts), going 10-0 with a 2.69 ERA (31 ER/103.2 IP) since July 26, 2020. His regular season winning streak is six (6-0, 3.12 ERA) over 15 games (14 starts)

He made his only career start against the Reds on Aug. 21, 2016 at Cincinnati, allowing just six hits and striking out six in 6.0 scoreless innings in a 4-0 Dodger win. It was the 13th MLB appearance of his career.
