San Diego vs St. Louis: MLB Odds and Betting Preview

Written by on July 2, 2015

Every season in every sport, there is a team that plays so well that every other team in the league dreads the prospect of having to face them. In the MLB, that team would be the St. Louis Cardinals. The team that has to face them next are the San Diego Padres, and to make matters worse, they are going to have to do it on the road. Game 2 of the 4-game series is set to go on Friday night, and we have a full game preview complete with MLB odds.

San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals: MLB Odds and Betting Preview

Time: Friday July 3rd, 6:15 p.m. ET Venue: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri National TV: None Opening line: San Diego +125, St. Louis -135
There really isn’t much that you can say about the St. Louis Cardinals (51-26) that hasn’t already been said. They are the dominant team in baseball right now, and have a winning record that no other team can come close to. That said, they are coming off a rather uncharacteristic 2-game sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox. While this has not been a common theme for the Cards this season, no-one is starting to doubt the talent of this squad. Their lead atop the NL Central has now stretched out to 7 games, and they have only lost 9 games at home this season. That latter state is one that is sure to strike fear and doubt into any team about to make the trip to Busch Stadium. Michael Wacha (10-3, 2.77 ERA) will get the start as he looks to build on his already impressive season numbers. The San Diego Padres (37-43) head out on the road after failing to impress in a 5-game home stand that saw them go just 2-3. Worse still was the fact that they started out with a pair of wins before dropping 3-straight. The Padres have failed to win a road series in their last 4 attempts, with their best effort in that stretch being a split with the Braves in Atlanta. That does not bode well for them, as they are about to head into territory that is about as hostile as it gets. They have a grueling 10-game road trip to close out the first half, with trips to Pittsburgh and Texas coming right after the St. Louis series. This is a trip that has the potential to put their season in serious jeopardy, as they are already 8 games off the pace in the division. Andrew Cashner (3-9, 4.22 ERA) will take to the mound for the Padres on Friday. Cashner only managed a single win in 6 attempts during the month of June.

Key Betting Trends

  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of San Diego’s last 6 games when playing St. Louis
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Diego’s last 6 games when playing on the road against St. Louis
  • St. Louis is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games when playing at home against San Diego
  • St. Louis is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games at home

My Betting Prediction

Cashner has been better than his record suggests, but he is still going to be in tough in this one. I like the Cardinals to walk away with the win, which they usually always do anyway when playing at home. Sources: YahooSports:
