The teams have split two meetings. The most recently played Jan. 23 in Dallas and the Rockets won 133-108. Eric Gordon scored a season-high 33 points, DeMarcus Cousins had his best game for Houston with 28 points and 17 rebounds – Cousins is no longer with Houston. Mavs star Luka Doncic scored 26 points while sitting the entire fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Kristaps Porzingis was out injured. Houston connected on 16 3-pointers (.432, 16-37 3FG) to Dallas’ 5 (.200, 5-25 3FG) for the game.
The Rockets have taken 3-of-4, 5-of-7, 13-of-17, and 19 of the last 26 meetings in the series. Dallas hasn’t won a season series since winning 3-1 in 2012-13 (3 times since). Why Bet on Dallas?
The Mavs won their fifth in a row Monday, upsetting Utah 111-103. Kristaps Porzingis, Dallas’ No. 2 scorer and leading rebounder, sat out with a sprained right wrist. He is questionable for this one. So is fellow big man Maxi Kleber.
Luka Doncic celebrated being named the Western Conference Player of the Week with 31 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and six 3-pointers. The Mavs stopped the league’s best team’s nine-game winning streak, as well as won their fifth straight game and have now won 15 of their last 21 contests, making them one of the NBA’s hottest teams.
Dorian Finney-Smith blew away his previous season high of 14 points by hitting 8-of-17 shots and a season-high five triples for 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Jalen Brunson hit 8-of-15 shots and four 3-pointers for 20 points, four rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Brunson has now scored between 15 and 24 points in five of his last six games.
When Dallas carried a commanding 87-69 lead into the fourth quarter, those 69 points represented the fewest the Jazz have scored after three quarters all season. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was pleased to hold the NBA’s No. 3 scoring team, averaging 117.2 points going in, to its lowest point total since Feb. 7 after losing the previous two games in the season series at Utah in late January.
“The last two times we played these guys we were the ones who got hit in the mouth and we knew we had to be the ones that were hitting (the Jazz in the mouth) tonight,” Carlisle said. “Our level of physical presence was much, much better just all the way across the board. I think that was the key to the game. They felt us the majority of the game.”Why Bet on Houston?
The Rockets lost their fifth in a row Monday, 133-130 at home vs. Phoenix but covered a 14-point spread. The Suns led 101-92 after three quarters, but Houston opened the fourth with a 9-0 run. Houston trailed by nine again with a minute left, but Jae’Sean Tate and Kelly Olynyk made back-to-back 3-pointers for the Rockets. Christian Wood made two free throws to cut the Suns’ lead to one with 3.5 seconds remaining. Suns star Devin Booker hit two free throws, and Houston’s inbounds pass was deflected to end the game.
Wood hit just 8-of-21 shots and three 3-pointers for 23 points and three rebounds. Wood has shot it poorly in three of his last four games and hasn’t looked like the same player since he returned from his severely sprained ankle on March 17. Tate started and hit 7-of-12 shots and three 3-pointers for 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Kevin Porter Jr. hit 5-of-10 shots, a 3-pointer and 9-of-10 free throws for 20 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three turnovers in 30 minutes. Kelly Olynyk started for Danuel House and hit 7-of-8 shots, 3-of-3 3-pointers and 4-of-5 free throws for 21 points, four rebounds, one assist, two steals and five turnovers in 29 minutes. Olynyk has scored 20+ points in three of his six games as a Rocket after doing so three times in 43 games with Miami this season. With Houston, he’s averaging 18.7 ppg on 61.9% shooting (10.0 ppg for Miami).
John Wall, Eric Gordon and House all missed the game – House is expected to miss 7-10 days with a sprained ankle. Gordon isn’t likely to play here, while Wall (left knee effusion) is questionable.
The Rockets are 2-7 over their past nine games after losing a franchise-record 20 straight from 2/6-3/3/21. Houston’s last six losses have come by an average of 9.0 points (54 total) after the previous 14 losses from 2/22-3/24 were by an average of 18.1 ppg.Expert Prediction
