Gonzaga vs Loyola Marymount College Hoops Preview

Written by on February 11, 2015

The West Coast Conference may not be the most glamorous in NCAA Basketball odds, but there can be no denying that the Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-1, 12-0) are one of the elite teams in the country right now. There are even some who are suggesting that they should be in the #2 spot over Virginia, but this is a team that really isn’t concerned about that. What they want to do is take care of business in their final few games and go rolling into the tournament.

My Game Preview and Betting Analysis

There is no secret to the success of Gonzaga, and you need only look at their offensive stats to see what that is. They are 7th in the nation in points per game with 80.7, but they also back that up with a .532 average from the field, which is more than enough to rank them first. Leading the offensive charge for the Bulldogs is Kyle Wiltjer, who is averaging 16.4 PPG, which he has achieved with a ridiculous .541 FG%. The Bulldogs are not as gifted on the defensive side of the ball, but they really don’t have to be when they are putting up such solid offensive numbers. That said, they are going to have to find a way to batten down the hatches a little if they want a deep run in the tournament. They have been unstoppable in WCC play this season, and will look to extend their run with a win over Loyola Marymount on Thursday night. The Loyola Marymount Lions (8-17, 4-9) look more like lambs to the slaughter coming into this match-up. In fairness, though, they have been a little more competitive of late, winning back to back games versus Pacific and San Diego before running into a brick wall versus BYU. It’s hard to be among the best when you are only averaging 64.1 PPG. Evan Payne has been excellent for the Lions all year, averaging 17.8 PPG, but it is often a case of him being asked to carry the offense on his own. The next best scorer on the Lions is Marin Mornar with 10.7 PPG, quite a ways off the pace being set by Payne.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bet

These two met up on January 17th, and it was Gonzaga who rolled to a 72-55 road win. Things could be even more lopsided this time around, with the Bulldogs looking to put on a show in front of their home crowd. I’m looking for Gonzaga to win this one by 20 points or more.
