Analysis
The 17th-ranked Louisville pounded the snot out of Murray State in their convincing 55-10 rout on Saturday as Lamar Jackson passed for 349 yards and three touchdowns while adding 100 rushing yards and an additional touchdown. North Carolina State took care of business in their 33-25 win over on Saturday as quarterback Ryan Finley passed for 186 yards and one score while running back Nyheim Hines rushed for 115 yards and another touchdown. Backup running back Jaylen Samuels added 74 yards and another score and NC State limited the Orange to just 59 rushing yards. With both of these ACC rivals allowing approximately 24.0 points per game defensively, No. 17 Louisville is the simple pick to win and cover as slight road favorites mostly because they have the gifted Jackson and the far more explosive offense. Louisville has won three straight in this series including last season’s emphatic 54-13 win as a 19-point home favorite. The Cardinals also have the better head coach in this contest and have gone a blistering 21-7 in their L/28 road games against a team with a winning record. NC State cashed in for me two weeks ago as a double-digit road dog against Florida State, but they’re going to find stopping Lamar Jackson next to impossible as they fall at home and fail to cover the spread. Analysis
Cal never had a chance in their humbling 45-24 Week 5 loss against now, unranked Oregon this past Saturday. While quarterback Ross Bowers was solid in completing 23 of 41 passes for 255 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, the Golden Bears gave up a whopping 328 rushing yards and five rushing scores in the loss to the Ducks while getting held to a jaw-dropping eight rushing yards on 29 team carries. On the flip side of the coin, No. 6 Washington is making my preseason pick of them both, winning the Pac-12 and reaching the four-team playoff look really good right now. The Huskies smacked Oregon State senseless by scoring 35 second-half points en route to a commanding 42-7 win on Saturday as quarterback Josh Browning threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns while running back Myles Gaskin added 113 rushing yards and one score. While this nearly four-touchdown spread looks daunting, I’m going on record to say that I like the Washington Huskies to get both, the SU win and narrow ATS cover, mostly because they’re the better team in all three phases and have a legitimate pair of Heisman Trophy candidates. Cal is just 1-5 ATS in their last six road games and 0-4 ATS in their last four road games against a team with a winning home record. Washington has gone 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games and 4-1 ATS in their L/5 games against a team with a winning record. Championship-hopeful Washington wins and narrowly covers!
