Louisiana-Lafayette vs Appalachian State 2019 Sun Belt Championship Lines & Game Analysis

Written by on December 4, 2019

For the longest time, there was a demand for the NCAA to implement a playoff in college football to help clear up some of the controversy that came with picking the two teams to be in the National Championship.  The playoffs have proven to be a success, but the controversy is not really gone. There are a growing number of fans who would like to see the playoffs expanded to 8 teams, with the logical choice being that the Power 5 conference champions would be in, as well as 3 other teams, most likely pulled from the Group of 5 conferences.

That would certainly make Conference Championship Weekend a good deal more exciting than it is now, while also making games like the Sun Belt Championship Game all the more important.

For now, though, things will stay as they are, but we can still look forward to a good game on Saturday when the ULL Ragin Cajuns and the Appalachian State Mountaineers lock horns to win the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers come into this one as a 6 ½ point favorite, with the point total set at 56.

Why bet on the ULL Ragin Cajuns?

Louisiana finished the season with an impressive 10-2 record, winning each of their last 6 games to make it into the conference championship game. They were winners of 9 of their last 10, but it was that lone loss that is perhaps a little concerning, as it was a 17-7 defeat at the hands of the Appalachian State Mountaineers. That was certainly an off day for an offense that averaged close to 39 PPG this season.

What is also a little worrying is the fact that the Ragin Cajuns have been unable to beat the Mountaineers in their last 7 attempts. It’s not all doom and gloom, though, as Louisiana is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games played away from home, while also going 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

Why bet on the Appalachian State Mountaineers?

The Appalachian State Mountaineers are likely still kicking themselves for not going unbeaten in the regular season, with a 24-21 loss to Georgia Southern being the game that did them in. On the plus side, they followed that up with a huge win on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks. They were unstoppable after that victory, going 3-0 SU in their final 3 games of the year and averaging close to 45 PPG in those outings.

This is a team that is always tough to beat, with the Mountaineers going 17-1 SU in their last 18 games. They have also been a pretty decent bet against the spread, covering in 7 of their last 10 games. They are a perfect 7-0 SU in their 7 meetings with the Ragin Cajuns.
