The NFL Regular Season is in the books. Although there were a few hiccups, the season went off without a major problem arising. The top teams in the league performed well. Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Kansas City, Baltimore, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Green Bay all the made the postseason. Check out an update on the top teams as well as how a few of the worst teams plan on getting better as we head to the NFL Playoffs. Chiefs head to playoffs at huge underlay odds
Super Bowl future bettors love the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs offer the lowest odds of any team to win the Bowl. They’re at a terrible +175.
Although Kansas City should be the favorite, they haven’t played like a less than +200 choice. KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished the regular season with a 7-to-4 TD-to-INT ratio. Mahomes didn’t play in Week 17, which means he’ll have a full two weeks of rest.
That’s not always a recipe for success. Also, the Chiefs failed to cover in 7 of their final 8 games. The lone cover, a 32-29 win over the Saints in New Orleans, is borderline because the odds drifted down to -2.5 before kickoff when it was at -3 for the entire week.
In addition, the Chiefs beat the Saints in Drew Brees first game back from an injury and New Orleans played without Michael Thomas, their best wide receiver. All of it adds up to the defending champions offering underlay odds to win the Super Bowl.
Per Super Bowl handicappers Saints, Packers, and Bills have best shot of beating Kansas City
Buffalo is the hottest team in the NFL and deserves a strong look to win the NFL Championship. The odds on the Buffalo Bills have gone from +2200 in Week 15 to +650. The Bills are on a 9 game ATS cover streak. They would have won 9 straight if not for a Hail Mary pass from Kyler Murray to DeAndre Hopkins in the loss against Arizona.
Green Bay and the New Orleans Saints head into the playoffs after strong victories. The Saints beat the Panthers 33-7 in Week 17, making it two victories in a row.
The Packers are on a 6-game winning streak. Green Bay’s defense hasn’t allowed a team to score more than 16 since a Week 15 win versus the Detroit Lions. The Packers’ odds to win the Super Bowl should be in line with Kansas City’s. Green Bay is playing so well they may be an overlay at +400.
Jags, Jets, and Chargers waste no time in ditching head coaches
While contenders prepare this week for NFL Playoff games, a few of the worst teams in the league ditched their 2020 coaches. The Jets, Chargers, and Jaguars will have new head coaches next season.
The New York Jets gave Adam Gase his walking papers. Gase doesn’t have the managerial skills to run a football team. He may be a talented play-caller, but the man can’t get the most out of his players. The Jets have the second pick in the draft. Depending on the new coach, the Jags could decide to go with Justin Fields, Ohio State’s quarterback, or Penei Sewell, the massive offensive lineman at Oregon.
Because the Jacksonville Jaguars will draft Trevor Lawrence with the first pick, dropping Doug Marrone makes all the sense in the world. Lawrence requires an offensive-minded coach, not a defensive coach like Marrone.
The Los Angeles Chargers fired Anthony Lynn because he couldn’t get the defense to play well enough to support Justin Herbert. Like the Jags, the Bolts will look for an offense leaning coach.
The Houston Texans, Atlanta Falcons, and Detroit Lions are also looking for new head coaches. Houston is the prime landing spot. Deshaun Watson has All-Pro quarterback skills. He’s already one of the best signal-callers in the league.
Expect the top coaching candidates to vie for the Texans’ job. LAC and Jacksonville are also decent landing spots. The Falcons, Lions, and Jets may struggle to find the perfect candidate. Detroit and NYJ are franchises that have terrible histories with head coaches. Atlanta is a salary cap nightmare.
