Chiefs and Ravens show why they’re the chalk to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy

The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens entered the 2020-2021 NFL Season close to co-favoritism to win the championship. In Week 1, neither disappointed. The Chiefs opened the season last Thursday on Sep. 10 with an inspired 34-20 win over the Houston Texans.

KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns. Patrick wasn’t the story, though. The most impressive player for the Chiefs’ was running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Last season, Kansas City averaged 98.1 rushing yards per game. Clyde will make sure that average breaks 120 per.

Edwards-Helaire is a fantastic running back. He racked up 138 rushing yards and a 5.5 per carry average in KC’s first game. If the Chiefs have a rushing attack, the offense becomes even more difficult to stop. So, don’t expect KC to hold those +510 odds.

Like Kansas City, Baltimore improved as well. Lamar Jackson, the reigning MVP, completed 20-of-25 for 275 yards and 3 TD passes. He also rushed for 45 yards on 7 carries.

But the real reason the Ravens dominated is because during the offseason Baltimore added a lockdown defense. The Ravens held the Browns to 6 points. If the defense continues to play this well, Baltimore should become co-favorite to win the Super Bowl. No team can move the football as efficiently as the Baltimore Ravens except, maybe, Kansas City.

Brees outduels Brady in N’Awlins

Brady versus Brees was the story in NFL Week 1. But although the GOAT threw for more yards than Brees, the Saints signal-caller came out ahead. New Orleans beat Tampa Bay 34-23. Glass half full Tampa fans will say that if it wasn’t for Tom’s two interceptions, one of which resulted in a pick 6, the Bucs may have upset the Saints.

That’s probably true. But what Tampa fans must worry about is how the Bucs rushed for just 3.3 yards per carry. That won’t work in the long run.

The Saints offense didn’t play great. Brees wasn’t sharp but he didn’t through a pick. Also, he threw some nice underneath passes to Alvin Kamara and tight-end Jared Cook.

There are a couple of ways we can look at the game. We can either assume that both future hall of fame quarterbacks have lost something. Or, we can just write it off as two very good teams battling it out in a divisional game. The Bucs battle the tough Panthers in NFL Week 2 while the Saints head to Vegas. Those games will tell us more about whether Brees and Brady have lost a step.

Colts, 49ers, and Cowboys get “most disappointing” awards

The Colts, 49ers, and Cowboys all lost as against the spread favorites. Of the three, Indianapolis’ 20-27 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars is the most worrisome. Both the Cowboys and 49ers played tough teams.

The Boys were in Los Angeles to break-in the Rams’ and Chargers’ new stadium. LAR has a great defense and good offense. The 49ers faced the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards’ offense is loaded with Kyler Murray, DeAndre Hopkins, and Kenyan Drake.

But the Colts? They were over 10-point favorites to dominate what many felt was the worst team in the league. Indianapolis looked like they were on their way to that dominating victory until Gardner Minshew rallied the Jags for the improbable win.

On Sep. 20, Indianapolis takes on Minnesota. The Vikings laid an egg against the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers in Week 1. It’s huge a game for both teams.

Raiders unveil Las Vegas stadium in NFL Week 2

The Las Vegas Raiders open Allegiant Stadium on Monday night. The New Orleans Saints are in town for what should be a dynamite game. Make sure to tune into that battle.

Sunday Night Football’s matchup is New England against Seattle. Both teams looked strong in Week 1 wins. Don’t forget about that game, either.

Have a great rest of your week!
