First Meeting

The Skins go for the season sweep as they beat the Cowboys 20-17 in Week 7. Brett Maher missed a 52-yard field goal at the end after an odd penalty was called that moved the kickback from 47. His miss foiled a spirited comeback attempt after Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s strip-sack of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was recovered for a touchdown by Preston Smith with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter to give Washington a 20-10 lead.

The Skins got 99 yards rushing from Adrian Peterson and Alex Smith was 14 for 25 for 178 yards, including a 23-yard TD on a swing pass to Kapri Bibbs in the first quarter. The Redskins limited Ezekiel Elliott to 34 yards on 15 carries, the second-lowest total of his pro career. Prescott was 22 for 35 for 273 yards, with one TD pass and one TD run.

The bad was that Alex Smith suffered a gruesome broken leg in the loss and his season is over. Smith was injured when Houston’s J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson sacked him with 7 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter. As Smith left the field on the cart, he waved to the crowd and put his hands together as if in a prayer. It looked just like the Joe Theismann injury, which happened exactly 33 years earlier to the day. Colt McCoy replaced Smith and nearly led the Redskins to a comeback win, but a 63-yard field goal in the final seconds fell 10 yards short as Houston beat Washington 23-21. McCoy will start here, while the team signed Mark Sanchez to back him up.

The Redskins will play on Thanksgiving for a third consecutive season for the first time in team history. After defeating the New York Giants, 20-10, on Thanksgiving last season, the Redskins will be seeking victories in consecutive Thanksgiving games for the first time in team history.

The game will be the Redskins’ 11th Thanksgiving Day contest all-time and their ninth such game against the Cowboys. A win would be the Redskins’ fourth all-time victory on Thanksgiving, including wins against the Lions in 1973, Cowboys in 2012 and Giants in 2017.

A win would give the Redskins victories in a Thursday game in consecutive seasons for the first time in team history. The Redskins will attempt to snap a two-game road losing streak against the Cowboys and earn their first victory at AT&T Stadium since a 34-23 victory on Jan. 3, 2016.

The Cowboys had their second straight upset win Sunday, 22-19 in Atlanta. Brett Maher’s 42-yard field goal as time expired gave Dallas the win after surrendering a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. Ezekiel Elliott had a huge day for the Cowboys in what was a defensive slugfest until a wild fourth quarter, with the teams combining for 26 points over the last 15 minutes. He had 122 yards rushing on 23 carries, including a 23-yard touchdown, and led the team with seven catches for 79 yards.

Elliott, who has 4,540 scrimmage yards and 32 touchdowns in 35 career games, joined Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson (4,731 scrimmage yards, 38 touchdowns) and Edgerrin James (4,842 scrimmage yards, 38 touchdowns) as the only players in NFL history with at least 4,500 scrimmage yards and 30 touchdowns in their first 35 career games in NFL history.

Redskins vs Cowboys is one of the best NFL Week 12 games.

Dak Prescott completed 22-of-32 passes for 208 yards in the win, adding a four-yard rushing touchdown. After not scoring a rushing touchdown the first five weeks, Prescott has four of them over the last five games. Amari Cooper caught 3-of-5 targets for 36 yards. It was a step back for Cooper in his third game with the team after amassing an 11-133-1 line in his first two appearances against the Titans and Eagles.

Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim will undergo surgery for a broken wrist and is out for Week 12. It’s unclear if he’ll be sidelined even longer or will try to play with some sort of cast. Swaim has 26 catches for 242 yards and one touchdown after catching 11 balls 2015-2017. Cowboys LT Tyron Smith (neck) is expected to play Thursday. Smith suffered a stinger on the final drive against the Falcons.&

Rookie WR Michael Gallup plans to play on Thanksgiving. Informed of his brother’s suicide after the Cowboys’ win on Sunday, Gallup stayed in Atlanta to be with his family, and he has yet to rejoin the team but plans to go.
