Last Season

The teams split. The game in Arizona had the Cards as 6-point favorites in Week 16 but they were upset by a depleted Niners team 20-12. Then-Niners third-string QB CJ Beathard threw three touchdown passes and Jeff Wilson ran for 183 yards. None of those guys will be playing in this one. Kyler Murray completed 31 of 50 passes for 247 yards, no touchdowns and a late pick. The Niners lead the all-time series 32-27.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The Niners (2-2) lost their second game in a row last Sunday, 28-21 at home to Seattle. The appeared to have dominated the game as they posted a season-high 457 total net yards to Seattle’s 234, ran 72 offensive plays (Seattle – 54), averaged 6.3 yards per play (Seattle – 4.3) and led the time of possession in the contest (31:40 to Seattle’s 28:20). But mistakes were ultimately what cost San Francisco.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t play in the second half due to injury and rookie Trey Lance completed 9-of-18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Kyle Shanahan said “it looked like a typical first game. … that’s why he’s a number-two quarterback.”

However, Lance is expected to start here because Jimmy G is still dealing a calf injury and hadn’t practiced through Thursday. Shanahan has tried to claim there is a chance Garoppolo still starts this week, but that seems quite unlikely. If Lance starts, it will mean five rookie quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft will have made their starting debuts.

Star left tackle Trent Williams was carted off against the Seahawks on two separate occasions. The first time he was cramping and needed treatment in the locker room. The second time he was dealing with a shoulder issue that knocked him out for the game. It’s likely Williams plays here, though.

San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel leads the NFL with 490 receiving yards. In franchise history, only Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (522 in 1995) collected more through the first four games of a season.

The Niners will have a new kicker this week after Robbie Gould went on injured reserve. The team signed Joey Slye. The 25-year-old was 4-for-5 in field goal tries with the Texans this year, moving to 58-for-73 (80%) in his career and 10-of-18 from 50-plus yards out.

Why Bet on Arizona?

Arizona’s offense leads the NFL in both total yards per game (440.5) and points per game (35.0). The Cardinals this season have opened 4-0 and scored at least 30 points with 400-or-more yards of offense in each of their first four games. Prior to this season, only three teams had done that, and each went to the Super Bowl: the 2013 Denver Broncos, 2007 New England Patriots and 2002 Raiders.

Three of Arizona’s wins this season have come on the road, and all have been by at least 12 points, including an impressive 37-20 triumph last week against the previously undefeated Rams. The Rams hadn’t allowed 30 points in a game for 16 straight games, and the Cards ended that with an exclamation point.

James Conner had two rushing touchdowns with his 50 yards, but it was Chase Edmonds who had 120 yards on only 12 carries, buoyed by a career-best 54-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals rushed for 216 yards, a season best.

Kyler Murray completed 24-of-32 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns against LA, adding six carries for 39 additional yards.  Murray leads all qualified passers with a 76.1 completion percentage (102 of 134) and ranks third in the NFL with 1,273 passing yards. On Sunday, he can become the third quarterback in NFL history with at least 1,500 passing yards and a completion percentage of 75-or-higher through his team’s first five games of a season.

DeAndre Hopkins (764 career receptions) needs one catch to surpass Larry Fitzgerald (764) for the most receptions ever by a player prior to his 30th birthday. Hopkins will be 29 years and 126 days old on Sunday.

The Cardinals have joined the 1980 San Diego Chargers as one of only two undefeated teams over the last 60 years to register three road wins in their first four games and win each by 12-or-more points. With at least 30 points against the 49ers, the Cardinals would become the sixth team to score at least 30 points in each of their first five games to start a season in NFL history. Four of the previous five teams to accomplish the feat advanced to the Super Bowl.
