Euro 2024 Odds, Picks and Predictions for Turkey vs Georgia & Portugal vs Czechia

EURO Cup Games For Tuesday: The 2024 European Championship is currently taking place in Germany, with the first round of games in the group stage close to completion.

Of course, each of the 24 teams has to play 3 games before the field is narrowed to 16 teams, and we move into the knockout phase.

My Analysis

If you are unfamiliar with this tournament, let’s quickly break down how the group stage works. There are 6 groups of 4 teams, each of whom will play every team within their group.

The top 2 teams in each group automatically move on, as do the 4 best 3rd place finishers, so a loss in the opening game is certainly not a death sentence, as 4 points might well be enough to get to the next round.

The final set of opening group stage games will go on Tuesday, with just 2 matches on the slate before we return to 3 per day. Let’s take a closer look at those 2 games.

Turkey -142 vs Georgia +410

One of the surprises of qualifying was that Turkey edged out Croatia to win their group, amassing 17 points from 8 games to beat Croatia by a single point. Since then, though, things have not been great for the Turks in their preparation for this tournament. Their best result was a 0-0 tie with Italy, but a 6-1 loss to Austria was not what they would have wanted.

Georgia had to take the long road to the Euros after finishing behind Spain and Scotland in their qualifying group. They made it to the playoffs courtesy of their performance in the Nations League, knocking off Luxembourg and Greece to make the final 24.

Given that they had to play those extra games, they have only had 1 warm-up game ahead of the tournament, which was a 3-1 win over Montenegro.

These teams have met in the past, but you need to go all the way back to 2012 to find the last meeting, which will have zero bearing on this game. While Turkey are now 5 games without a win, I think they edge what is likely to be a tight affair.

Portugal -206 vs Czechia +520

While Cristiano Ronaldo is still part of the Portugal setup, they are not going to be leaning on him as heavily in the past. This is a team that is strong even without him, as proven by them winning all 10 games in qualifying and racking up a +34 goal differential.

They have been a little up and down in warm-up games, which is never astounding, a bit for me, Portugal is a dark horse team to keep an eye on.

The Czechs finished 2nd in their qualifying group behind Albania, who were something of a surprise package. If that gives you some cause for concern, then perhaps you can take heat from how good Czechia has looked in preparing for the Euros, winning all 4 games and outscoring their opposition 13-4 in the process. This, though, is going to be a much tougher test.

As I mentioned a moment ago, I think Portugal have what it takes to make a deep run in this tournament, and I like them to get off to a winning start.
