MLS Cup Rematch Highlights Weekend Schedule

Seattle Sounders at Columbus Highlights Weekend Action

On paper, the best game of the weekend is the nationally televised tilt between 2020 MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew and current Western Conference-leading Seattle Sounders. Columbus beat Seattle 3-0 in December to lift the MLS Cup, and the teams drew 1-1 in March 2020. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

The Crew are really struggling after another goalless effort on Wednesday in a 1-0 loss at New York Red Bulls. They have lost five matches in a row, and striker Gyasi Zardes left the game with a hamstring injury just before halftime. They haven’t scored in the last two games and have more than one goal just twice since July 9.

Seattle went to Texas on Wednesday and beat FC Dallas 1-0 thanks to another goal from striker Raul Ruidiaz. The MLS scoring leader has 14 on the season, including four goals in his last three games. Seattle leads the West with 39 points, and they lead the MLS with a +17 goal differential.

Despite their recent struggles, Columbus is still favored at +123. Seattle is +210, and a draw is +235.

Minnesota United Hosts Sporting KC in West Showdown

Two top-six teams in the West go head-to-head Saturday afternoon in Minnesota. Sporting KC sit in second place after a 1-1 draw against Portland Wednesday night gave them four MLS matches in a row without a loss.

Daniel Salloi’s 11th goal of the season came at the death Wednesday night for the 1-1 draw. He took a pass from Alan Pulido and scored to tie the game in the first minute of stoppage time. SKC has two wins and a draw on the road this month, outscoring teams 6-1 in those three games.

Minnesota had been invincible at home before a 1-0 loss to LA Galaxy last Saturday. That loss was just their second at Allianz Field in 2021. A 1-1 draw at San Jose on Tuesday saw MUNFC slide into sixth on goal differential to Real Salt Lake.

The Loons outshot San Jose 15-4 on Tuesday and had 65% of the possession but gave up an own goal just 12 minutes into the match. Will Trapp tied the game 10 minutes later, but Minnesota United couldn’t find the winner.

These teams haven’t played in 2021, with the Loons eliminating Sporting KC from the 2020 playoffs with a 3-0 road win. SKC won in Minnesota last August 2-1, and they are +240 to get a win this weekend. The hosts are +116, and a draw is +220.

Colorado Rapids On Form as they Host Real Salt Lake

Two of the up-and-coming teams in the West meet up Saturday night in Colorado as the Rapids host rival Real Salt Lake. The Rapids have won three in a row on the road with a home draw mixed in as they have moved into fourth place, just one point behind the Galaxy. With a late win Wednesday night, RSL is now in fifth, but seven points behind Colorado.

The Rapids closed that gap on the top three with a 2-1 win in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Johnathan Lewis scored early, and a 73rd-minute winner from sub Andre Shunyashiki gave Colorado another road win.

Real Salt Lake has picked up two wins in the last four days. They beat Austin at home on Saturday thanks to a goal from new arrival Bobby Wood. The former USMNT striker is back in the US after 14 years in Germany and paying immediate dividends for RSL

Wood assisted on Justin Mercam’s first-half goal Wednesday at home against Houston, and Anderson Julio won the game 2-1 in the 88th minute. The road has been tough for RSL this season, with four losses and two draws. They scored twice in the last road trip to Portland, but it was too little, too late in a 3-2 loss.

These teams met just under a month ago with a 3-0 RSL home triumph. Wood and Rubio Rubin scored after an early own goal. Colorado dominated the stats sheet with 60% possession and outshot RSL 9-5 but couldn’t score.

The last three games between these teams have been 3-0 RSL, 5-0 Colorado in September 2020, and 4-1 RSL in August 2020. RSL leads the series 24-14 with 11 draws.

The hosts are -110 for Saturday’s 9:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Real Salt Lake is +270, and a draw is +245.
