If you’re a tennis fan and betting enthusiast that was fired up about this year’s French Open, well…you’ve got more than you bargained for.
You see, with the men’s and women’s semifinals matches now all set for Saturday, June 7, you’re going to be treated to a fantastic pairing of arguably the top two men to ever play the game, along with the world’s top-ranked player squaring off against the player that many believe is the second best clay court player in the world today.
Over on the women’s side, there’s some huge news taking place as American teenager Amanda Anisimova has reached the semis after dispatching the defending champion and World No. 2 on Thursday. With all four semifinal matches set to get underway in just over 24 hours, let’s find out who’s in action and which players are offering the best betting value in their respective pairings.
2019 French Open Semifinals Odds & Betting Preview
Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
- 2019 French Open Semifinals Odds: Federer +455 / Nadal -833
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal is 25-5 on the year with one title that he claimed at Rome just prior to the French open. Nadal advanced to a record-extending 12th semifinal at the French Open with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 win over Kei Nishikori on Tuesday. Rafa has only dropped one set to David Goffin along the way, so he’s clearly in good form.
“I’m very satisfied,” Nadal said during his on-court interview after the match. “It’s incredible. Lots of emotions. To be back in the semifinals is something very, very important.”
On the other side of the net, Nadal will meet World No. 3 Roger Federer who is playing at Roland Garros this year for the first time since 2015. Federer is 22-3 on the year with two titles and he also hits the semis having lost just one set to friend and countryman Stan Wawrinka.
This weekend’s showdown will be the 39th career meeting between Nadal and Federer and their sixth in Paris. While Nadal is 5-0 against Federer at Roland Garros, four of their five meetings have gone at least four sets.
Nadal leads the head-to-head matchup 23-15, but Federer has looked nothing less than phenomenal in reaching the semis in his first trip to Roland Garros. Still, Nadal leads 9-3 in majors and has a 13-2 career advantage on clay.
Federer, 37, is the oldest semifinalist at the French Open since 40-year-old Pancho Gonzalez in 1968. Friday’s meeting will be the 13th matchup in a Grand Slam event between the two superstars in the Open era.
“I really expect him to play aggressive, change rhythms, come to the net,” Nadal said of Federer. “That’s my feeling. He’s playing well and he has the tennis to make that happen.
Federer is also expecting to see his rival’s best tennis when they meet again.
“My next opponent is not too bad. He can play on clay, unfortunately,” a smiling Federer joked to the crowd at Court Suzanne Lenglen. “What a pleasure, actually. If I decided to come back to play on clay, it was maybe to play Rafa.”
Prediction
As much as I’d like to see Federer get the huge upset win in this match, no matter how hard I try to envision it, I just don’t see it happening. Nadal carries the moniker ‘The King of Clay’ for a reason and it’s because he’s virtually unbeatable on the surface. Coming into this year’s event, Nadal was a mind-boggling 86-2 at Roland Garros and that tells me he’s a near, sure-fire pick to get the win, although I’m thinking this one is going five sets.
2019 French Open Pick: Nadal in 5 Sets
Novak Djokovic vs. Dominic Thiem
- 2019 French Open Semifinals Odds: Djokovic -212 / Thiem +156
World No.1 Novak Djokovic is looking to nab his third straight grand slam title, but he’s going to have his work cut out against World No. 4 Dominic Thiem, the man generally regarded as the second-best clay court player in the world. The 32-year-old Djokovic is 23-5 on the year with two titles, including the 2019 Australian Open.
25-year-old Dominic Thiem is 17-8 on the year with two titles. While the sweet-swinging Austrian is a clay court master, he’s also just 2-6 in eight career matches against Djokovic, although he’s won two of their last three meetings on clay. Thiem did fall to Djokovic in Madrid a few weeks back.
Prediction
While Dominic Thiem is playing lights out tennis coming into the semis, I’m going with Djokovic to get the big win, simply because he knows what it takes to get where Thiem is wishing to go. Djokovic gets in done, but this one is also going five sets.
2019 French Open Pick: Novak Djokovic in 5 Sets
Ashleigh Barty vs. Amanda Anisimova
- 2019 French Open Semifinals Odds: Barty -188 / Anisimova +141
World No. 8 Ashleigh Barty is 24-5 on the year with one title while American teenage Amanda Anisimova is 14-9 with no titles. While these two have never met before, Barty has dropped just one set en route to the semis and dispatched American Madison keys 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinal round. Anisimova has yet to drop a set and dispatched World No. 2 and defending French Open champion Simona Halep 6-2, 6-4 in a dominating performance.
Prediction
While Ashleigh Barty is playing the best tennis of her career and holds a big advantage in experience, I’m going to back Amanda Anisimova to get another upset win to reach the 2019 French Open Finals in a three-set thriller!
2019 French Open Pick: Amanda Anisimova in 3 Sets
Johanna Konta vs. Marketa Vondrousova
- 2019 French Open Semifinals Odds: Konta -144 / Vondrousova +141
28-year-old World No. 6 Johanna Konta is 21-9 on the year with no titles, but she’s only dropped one set en route to the semis while dispatching World No. 7 Sloane Stephens in the quarters, 6-1, 6-4. 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova is 22-6 on the year with no titles, but she’s split two career meetings against Konta, although he slot to the hard-hitting German a few weeks back in three sets in Rome. Vondrousova beat Petra Martic in three tough sets in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinal round.
Prediction
With Johanna Konta emerging victorious in Rome a few of weeks back, I’m thinking the older and more experienced veteran is going to find a way to squeak past the clearly gifted Vondrousova in another three-set thriller.
2019 French Open Pick: Johanna Konta in 3 Sets
