COVID-19 Tennis Update – January 20th Edition

2021 Australian Open

  • When: February 8, 2021 – February 23, 2021
  • Where: Melbourne Australia

Players and coaches show up for the Aussie Open and, so far, it’s not looking good

On January 15, charter flights carrying coaches and players detected cases of coronavirus. Forty-seven players from two of the flights, one from Abu Dhabi where the WTA had their latest tournament, and one from Los Angeles, are now quarantining.

The good news? None of the cases involved players. Bianca Andreescu’s coach, though, said he did test positive for the virus after arriving from Abu Dhabi. Andreescu will quarantine for 14-days as will all other players who were on the Abu Dhabi flight.

Kei Nishikori and Victoria Azarenka are supposedly two players from the Los Angeles flight. Both must quarantine as well as other players from the Los Angeles flight.

The quarantine rules mean Nishikori, Azarenka, Andreescu and any other player from either flight may not practice. Although there are three weeks before the Aussie Open starts, the quarantine most definitely could affect preparation plans.

After Djokovic asks Australia to ease quarantine rules for players, Nick Kyrgios calls Novak “a tool”

Top ranked player Novak Djokovic sent a letter to Australian Open officials asking that they ease player quarantine restrictions. Djokovic asked that players be housed in separate residences with tennis courts.

The letter sparked a furor as Nick Kyrgios, the forty-seventh ranked player in the world, called Djoker a “tool” on Twitter. Kyrgios and many others believe Djokovic only wanted to curry favor from players by sending the letter to Aussie Open officials.

No matter the intent, the Australian Open won’t change quarantining rules. Not only that, but like very other tennis player, including Kyrgios, Djokovic is serving out his 14-day quarantine before getting back onto the court.

Osaka becomes a bigger favorite to win the Australian Open, Djokovic stays at even money

Djoker being a tool or not hasn’t changed his odds. The world #1 remains a strong +100 favorite to win the title. Novak Djokovic has won more Australian Open trophies than any other Grand Slam piece of hardware. +100 could be overlay odds if he doesn’t let the haters get to him.

On the women’s side, tennis handicappers appear to have settled on Naomi Osaka. The chalk dropped 50 points from last week, going from +750 to +700. Serena remains the +800 second-choice while home town hero Ashleigh Barty is at +900.
