US Open Men’s Quarter-Final Winning Predictions

Written by on September 6, 2016

We are in the second week of play at Flushing Meadow, and that means that the US Open is now getting down to the later stages of the tournament. The quarter-finals on the men’s side are all set to go, and there are a couple of surprises in there. The one thing that isn’t surprising, though, is that we are still on track for the Djokovic/Murray final that the majority of tennis fans are hoping for. Let’s take a look at the four quarter-final games, with a few betting odds predictions sprinkled in for good measure.

US Open Men’s Quarter-Final Winning Predictions

Novak Djokovic (1) Vs Jo Wilfred Tsonga (9)

There were some concerns about the top seed coming into this tournament, as a niggling wrist injury had seen his form dip over the summer. Novak Djokovic appears to be just fine now, though, as he has breezed through the opening three rounds of the tournament without really breaking a sweat. He has a tough opponent in Tsonga, but the issue here is that we never really know what we are going to get out of the Frenchman. Tsonga can be brilliant one day, and then petulant and uninterested the next. Which version will show up on Wednesday? Djokovic is 15-6 all-time versus Tsonga, and I like the Serb to win this one in 4 sets.

Lucas Pouille (24) Vs Gael Monfils (10)

It has been a good year for France at the US Open, and we are guaranteed to have at least one Frenchman in the upcoming semi-finals. Monfils has been on fire at this tournament, and has made it to the quarter-finals with relative ease. The same cannot be said for Pouille, as he has had to endure a trio of 5-set games, including a win over Rafael Nadal in the third round. These two have only met once before, at the 2015 Australian Open, and it was Monfils who won in 5 sets. Look for him to win again, only this time in 4.

Juan Martin Del Potro Vs Stan Wawrinka (3)

Argentinian Del Potro came into this tournament unseeded, but we really shouldn’t be surprised that he has done this well so far. This was a player who was very much on the rise before being hampered by wrist injuries over the past couple of seasons. He looks fit and healthy, and came into this event having won silver in Rio. Wawrinka is in the quarter-finals for the fourth straight year, but he has not looked entirely convincing this time around. This could be a tricky one for him, as he lost to Del Potro earlier this season at Wimbledon. I think we could see the upset here, with Del Potro winning in 5 sets.

Kei Nikoshori (6) Vs Andy Murray (2)

Andy Murray is, if nothing else, a model of consistency. This is his 22nd appearance in the quarter-finals in his last 23 Grand Slam tournaments. He has dominated in each of his three games so far, and his serve is reaching speeds that makes them close being impossible to return. Kei Nikoshori of Japan has also been playing well at this tournament, but is running into a man who is at the top of his game at the moment. I like Murray to win the whole thing, and I like him to win this one in 4 sets.
