Novak Djokovic (Still) The Man To Watch

The men’s field for the 2021 U.S. Open has changed quite drastically in the weeks leading to the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. With several withdrawals, there were also shifts in the ATP Betting Odds; however, one thing remained the same – Novak Djokovic is still viewed as the man to beat.

Just last week, we had Rafael Nadal priced as the third-favorite to win his 21st Grand Slam, but the Spaniard has since decided to withdraw from the competition due to an injury. Nadal’s withdrawal left quite a mark on the U.S. Open betting odds, with Alexander Zverev emerging as the new third-favorite to win the title.

Zverev, who was previously priced as the outsider, is now at +550, only slightly behind Daniil Medvedev at +400 and Djokovic at -160. As the price gap would suggest, Medvedev and Zverev will need to produce a miracle to derail Djokovic, but it’s not like that hasn’t happened before.

While there is always a chance that Djokovic underperforms – as he did in Tokyo – and loses his shot at completing the Grand Slam this season, it also seems highly unlikely that will happen. The Serbian tennis star has been phenomenal on the year and has proven time and time again why he should be considered as the GOAT.

Osaka No Longer The Favourite

Naomi Osaka was priced as the main betting favorite to win the 2021 U.S. Open last week, but her odds have since drifted from +300 to +400. The Japanese tennis star is now priced as the second-favorite, behind Ashleigh Barty at +300.

The odds shift isn’t that surprising since it was tough to understand why Osaka was expected to dominate the upcoming Grand Slam. Although she has achieved a lot across her career, Osaka hasn’t produced much in 2021. That is because she had withdrawn from the 2021 French Open and Wimbledon.

Barty, on the other side, is now priced at a much fairer price than where she was last week. Just seven days ago, the bookmakers had her priced at +650, which was way too high given her form and previous success at the U.S. Open (title in 2018, finals in 2019). Like Osaka, however, she hasn’t achieved much on the year – R2 exit in Australia and withdrawals from the French Open and Wimbledon.

Serena Williams was priced as the third-favorite to win the 2021 U.S. open last week at +800 but has since decided to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury. In her place, Aryna Sabalenka emerged as the new no.3 on the betting markets, priced at +900.

While Sabalenka deserves to be recognized for her talent, it’s fair to say that she will need to step up her game to challenge Osaka and Barty. The Belarus tennis player has recently made it to the semi-finals of the Canadian Open and the 2021 Wimbledon and has won 18 of 26 games on hard courts this season.

There is a world where Sabalenka defies the odds, but beating Barty (20/4 on hard courts in 2021) and Osaka (16/5 on hard courts in 2021) might be easier said than done.
