Aleksander Zverev vs Hubert Hurkacz

  • When: Thursday, November 18

Aleksander Zverev got off to a slow start to the tournament, losing to Daniil Medvedev (1-2) on day one, but he has since bounced back and won against Matteo Berrettini. Even though Zverev picked up a forfeit win, as Berrettini retired due to an injury after losing the first set, it’s fair to say that Zverev would have won that match.

Now Zverev has to face Hubert Hurkacz, who has yet to win a match so far. The Pole has already lost to Medvedev (1-2) and Jannik Sinner (0-2), and while his performances don’t inspire much confidence, there’s a reason to believe that Hurkacz might do better this time out.

Hurkacz is priced as a +294 underdog, while Zverev is at -476, which is quite a generous offer on the outsider. Admittedly, the Pole hasn’t impressed yet, but he has won a set against Medvedev and is known for his solid performance in indoor courts.

Most recently, Hurkacz won a title on speedy courts of Metz and has also shown that he can perform on slower surfaces with a semi-finals appearance in Paris. You should feel slightly concerned with Hurkacz’s showing against Sinner (2-6, 2-6) on Tuesday, but one poor showing doesn’t mean much.

What’s more, Zverev is fresh off a 2:39 hour battle with Medvedev, which he lost 1-2, and while nearly beating Medvedev is an achievement, Zverev just might be fatigued enough to show some cracks here.

A 2-1 victory for Zverev seems likely; however, we wouldn’t count out the possibility of an upset win either. Hurkacz to win one set is the right bet here.

Prediction: Hurkacz to win one set -120 at MyBookie

Daniil Medvedev vs Jannik Sinner

  • When: Thursday, November 18

By beating Zverev on Tuesday, Medvedev is already qualified for the next stage of the competition, so this match doesn’t necessarily mean much to him. Obviously, he would still want to win just to keep his record intact, but realistically, Medvedev might want to preserve his energy a bit.

This should give Jannik Sinner an excellent chance to grab his second consecutive tournament win to add to his victory against Hurkacz. On the topic of that match, Sinner was simply phenomenal, winning the game 6-2, 6-2, proving once more that he can compete with the best.

Obviously, beating Medvedev will be more challenging than defeating Hurkacz, but Sinner definitely has the talent to make something happen. These two last met earlier this year in Marseille, when Medvedev won 2-1 and 2-0, so it makes to expect him to win again.

We would be surprised if he wouldn’t since Medvedev is playing like one of the top favorites to go all the way, but he isn’t a good bet at -322, nor are we too excited about betting on a clean sweep at -108.

Sinner has had some excellent showings of late and needs this win much more than Medvedev. We expect that to translate into a strong performance from the Italian, who should grab at least one set.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win one set – 136 at MyBookie
