There are 5 races of the 2022 WRC season in the books, and with 8 races still to come, you hate to say that the champion looks to be a foregone conclusion. While there is still plenty of racing to come, the lead at the top is growing and reaching a point where the leader is beginning to look uncatchable. Still, the chasing pack need to keep plugging away in hopes of closing that gap, and they will try to do that this weekend in Kenya. This is a challenging rally that is going to be tough on all the drivers, but someone is going to come out on top. Will it be the current leader, or will one of the chasing pack make their mark? Let’s take a look at the current top 4 drivers so you can continue making your bets against the WRC Odds.
2022 Safari Rally Kenya Analysis and Preview | WRC Betting
Kalle Rovanpera
Like we said at the top of this piece, we have one driver making things look very easy this season. That would be Rovanpera, who has won 3 of the 5 races to this point, while never finishing worse than 5th in the other 2. That has allowed him to amass 120 points, which has him 55 points up on the closest challenger. It is, with 8 races still remaining, not an insurmountable lead, but if Rovanpera continues with his hot form this season, the battle for the championship is going to be over sooner rather than later. Rovanpera ran 6th in Kenya last season, but his current form suggests he might be ready to do better than that this time around.
Thierry Neuville
The Belgian driver comes into the Kenyan Grand Prix sitting in 2nd overall, amassing 65 points in the process. He has yet to pick up a win this season, but he was consistently good through the opening 4 races, not finishing worse than 6th in those runs. It was the last rally in Italy that really hurt his chances, though, as he finished 41st overall and only managed to pick up 5 points. It will be interesting to see what he does in this one, as he failed to finish in Kenya last year.
Ott Tanak
As we regularly see in any sport, getting off to a slow start makes winning a championship that much more difficult. Tanak certainly dug a hole for himself in the early going this season, failing to finish in Monaco for the 3rd straight season, and then following that up with a 20th place finish in the second race of the year. Since then, he has buckled down and started picking up points at a good clip. That included winning the previous race in Italy to get to 62 points, just 3 back of Neuville. Tanak finished 3rd in Kenya last year, so a good chance he might close the gap even more.
Craig Breen
We are getting to the point where we are looking at drivers who are unlikely to chase down the leader. Breen has finished in the top 10 overall in the last 2 seasons and is having a great start to this season, where he is sitting 4th overall. He has had a pair of podium finishes this year, but this will be his first run in Kenya. It is tough to predict what he might do there, but he has been regularly among the leaders, so a top 5 finish looks good here.
