In 2017, ASU hosted No. 5 Washington and pulled the upset 13-7. Manny Wilkins completed 29 of 41 passes for 245 yards. It was the highest-ranked team the Sun Devils had beaten since they defeated then-No. 1 Nebraska on Sept. 21, 1996. Washington lost at Arizona State for the seventh straight time and hasn’t won in Tempe since 2001. Huskies kicker Van Soderberg missed field goals of 27 and 21 yards. The Sun Devils (2-1) were upset last week at San Diego State 28-21 as the Aztecs beat the Sun Devils for the second straight year. This one spoiled the homecoming of new ASU coach Herm Edwards, who played his final college season with the Aztecs in 1976 and then graduated from SDSU with a degree in criminal justice. ASU’s Manny Wilkins appeared to complete a 48-yard pass to Frank Darby to the SDSU 2-yard-line with six seconds left, and SDSU’s Trenton Thompson was called for targeting. After review, the targeting call was upheld, but the referees determined that the pass was incomplete. ASU got the ball at the SDSU 35 for one final play and SDSU batted away the desperation pass in the end zone. Wilkins finished the game with 341 passing yards on 31-of-46 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown. This is the second time Wilkins has posted back-to-back 300-yard passing games. Wilkins threw for 381 yards two weeks ago vs. Michigan State and had 341 yards at SDSU. Last season Wilkins has consecutive 300-yard outings at Texas Tech (326 yards – 9/16/17) and vs. Oregon (347 yards – 9/23-17). For the third consecutive game this season, the Sun Devils did not allow a point in the first quarter – outscoring SDSU 7-0 and now outscoring opponents 21-0 in the frame on the season. ASU has won 11 of its last 12 games against Washington (since 2002), a streak rivaled only by Oregon’s 12-4 record over the Huskies in that time. Washington has been ranked three times in the past five contests between the two teams with ASU going 2-1 in those games (wins in 2013 and 2017 and a loss in 2016). That 2016 loss in Seattle has been the lone setback for ASU in the series since 2002. ASU is 16-22-2 all-time in the first Pac-12 game of the season and 16-23-1 in the first Pac-12 road game of the season.Why Bet on Washington?
The Huskies (2-1) won at Utah 21-7 last week, and it’s never easy to win there. The Utes started all three fourth-quarter drives inside the Washington 35-yard line but went 0-of-3 on fourth down on each drive. Gaskin ran for 143 yards on 30 carries and added a touchdown for UW. Jake Browning threw for 155 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Aaron Fuller led the way with 108 yards on six catches. Gaskin enters the ASU game with 4,326 yards, 7th-most in Pac-12 history. Gaskin scored his 51st career touchdown against Utah, extending his school record. His 47 career rushing TDs (he has four receiving TDs) rank 8th in Pac-12 history. With 82 career touchdown passes, Browning is one TD away from the Pac-12’s all-time top-10. Browning’s 9,868 career passing yards currently rank No. 2 in UW history and No. 19 in the Pac-12.
“Well they’re a vertical team and they’re going to throw it down the field. They’ll take vertical shots similar to what we do. They got some explosive players but they’re very balanced. They can run the football,” Herm Edwards said of UW. “They rush it for about 156 yards per game so that’s gotta be a concern too.”
With weather conditions expecting to be a factor this weekend, both teams are likely to want to run the ball. The Huskies could emulate what San Diego State did with their rushing attack as the Aztecs gained over 300 yards on the ground.
Since the 1947 season, Washington is 213-66-3 (.760) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies were 8-0 in such games in 2016, were 5-1 in 2017 and are 1-0 this year. Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 114 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 97-16-1 (.856) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 72-13-1 (.843) when rushing for 200 yards.
