How to Bet Arkansas vs Texas A&M NCAA Football Week 5

Written by on September 27, 2018

Both Texas A&M and Arkansas have new coaches this season: Jimbo Fisher and Chad Morris, respectively. The Hogs aren’t very good, while the Aggies need this one to boost their chances of reaching a bowl game. They are sizable NCAAF odds favorites against Arkansas in a neutral-site game outside Dallas.

The Hogs lost a wild game to the Aggies in Dallas, 50-43 in overtime. Armani Watts sealed the victory with an interception in the end zone after Christian Kirk had given the Aggies the lead on a 10-yard touchdown reception, his third score of the day, on the first possession of overtime. Kirk is now with the Arizona Cardinals. The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter before Texas A&M kicker Daniel LaCamera tied it at 43 on a 27-yard field goal with four seconds remaining. It was the third time in four years that A&M and Arkansas needed overtime to decide a winner. The Aggies are now 6-0 in the series since joining the SEC in 2012 and, along with No. 1 Alabama, are one of two SEC West teams that Arkansas has failed to defeat during that time.

Why Bet on Arkansas?

The Hogs (1-3, 0-1) were dominated in a 34-3 loss at No. 9 Auburn last week. Rakeem Boyd had eight carries for 66 yards, but the Razorbacks had few offensive highlights. One week after Cole Kelley threw four interceptions in a loss to North Texas, Ty Storey returned as the starting quarterback and completed 13 of 31 passes for 141 yards with one interception. He had 12 carries for 44 yards. Coach Chad Morris said Storey earned another start. Kelly made spot appearances for quarterback runs designed to take advantage of his 6-foot-7, 258-pound frame, but each time Storey returned the following play. Arkansas forced five 3-and-outs drives versus Auburn to run its season total to 17. Arkansas was down 17-0 at the half. However, on the three scoring drives, the Tigers only needed a combined 37 yards (27-yard TD drive; 1-yard FG drive and 9-yard TD drive). Arkansas’ defense is the top-ranked rush defense in the SEC after holding the Auburn running game to just 91 yards last week. The Hogs are allowing 88.3 yards per game on the ground and are one of three teams in the league to hold opponents under 100 yards rushing per game, including Texas A&M (92.5 ypg). The Razorbacks’ defense recorded nine tackles for loss last week at Auburn to bump the team’s average up to 7.8 TFLs per game, fourth-best in the SEC. Six different Hogs contributed to the TFL effort last week. Morris is a Texas A&M graduate, earning his degree in mathematics in 1992. Morris did not play football for the Aggies, however, and is one of five FBS coaches who did not play college football.

Why Bet on Texas A&M?

Is Texas A&M a safe bet for NCAA Football Week 5? The Aggies (2-2, 0-1) were at least somewhat competitive last week in a 45-23 loss at No. 1 Alabama. QB Kellen Mond completed 16 of 33 passes for 196 yards with a touchdown but was intercepted twice, including on his first throw. He collected 98 yards rushing despite getting sacked seven times. The SEC’s top rusher, Trayveon Williams, found little room to run. He gained 31 yards on eight carries. Mond, Penn State’s Trace McSorley, and Syracuse’s Eric Dungey are the only Power 5 quarterbacks with 7+ passing TDs and 4+ rushing TDs to their credit in 2018. Mond has passed or rushed for at least two TDs in every game in 2018 (three vs. NSU, Clemson, and ULM). Against Clemson and Alabama, the Aggies, as a team, posted 19 “explosive” plays of 20 or more yards in length. Mond either rushed or passed for all 19 explosives (5 rush / 14 pass). Despite the fact the Aggies have played two of the preeminent defenses in the nation in No. 1 Alabama and then-No. 2 Clemson, Texas A&M’s offense ranks seventh nationally and first in the SEC at 545.5 yards per game. Texas A&M’s defense ranks 10th nationally in rushing (92.5 YPG) and is holding opposing offenses to 24.4% on third downs, which is fifth nationally and second in the conference. Texas A&M carries a 31-game streak of scoring at least 14 points into Saturday’s game, which is the longest such streak in the SEC and ranks third among Power 5 schools (Oklahoma, 44 & West Virginia, 35).
