College Football Week 1 Expert Predictions

Written by on August 3, 2016

The countdown is now on until the start of the 2016 college football season, and that means it’s time to start thinking about how to manage your wagering money this year. With so many games on tap on any given week, it’s tempting to play a whole host of games. This is probably not the best way to manage your money, though, which is why I think the best idea is to only play the games you are really confident about. That said, you also want to find some value, as you aren’t going to make a lot of money wagering the bigger teams to win against powder puff opponents. One way around that is to play the spread, and since we already know what those are going to be for Week 1 of the season, we can start to think about putting together some picks. Please keep in mind that the online college football odds for all of these games may change, so be sure to check back for live odds updates.

College Football Week 1 Expert Predictions

South Carolina (+3) vs Vanderbilt

I imagine that you will want to get the wagering started as early as possible, so let’s take a look at one of the games set for Thursday. The Will Muschamp era begins on this day, and he will bring a fiery coaching style that was absent in the last couple of years of Steve Spurrier’s reign. There is a lot of talk that this is going to be a pretty untalented South Carolina Gamecocks team, but I’m adopting a wait and see attitude. SC has beaten Vanderbilt in 7 straight games, and never by less than 4 points. They don’t just cover here, they come away with the win.

Clemson (-7) vs Auburn

The Clemson Tigers are coming into this season with the goal of going one better than last year, which would mean a National Championship. Thy have a tricky start against Auburn, but this is a team that they have beaten quite comfortably in the last 3 meetings. The average margin of victory in those two wins was 10.5 points, which would be more than enough to cover here.

Houston (+10) vs Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners are proving to be one of the sexier dark horse picks for the coming season, and it’s easy to understand why. They are a solid looking team, but they have a killer schedule ahead of them through 2016. They start out with a tough one against the Houston Cougars, and while I expect the Sooners to come away with the win, I’m just not convinced that it will be of the double digit variety. Remember, this was a Houston team that went 13-1 last season. Those are three picks that stand out for me in the opening week, but let me stress again that the spreads may well change in the lead up to the actual games.
