Alabama beats Georgia in clash of titans, Clemson rolls, North Carolina loses
College Football Week 7’s top matchup, heck, the best matchup of the year, had the Georgia Bulldogs traveling to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Although Georgia played well enough in the first half to enter halftime with a 24-20 lead, the Tide rolled over the Bulldogs in the second half.
Alabama outscored Georgia 21-0 in the third and fourth quarters. Again Nick Saban beat former assistant Kirby Smart. About seven days ago, most didn’t believe Saban would get a chance to coach against his former pupil. The greatest college football coach in history, a man who has won six National Championships, tested positive for the coronavirus. In subsequent tests, though, Saban tested negative. He didn’t look sick on Saturday night as Alabama fans chanted Roll Tide throughout the game.
Alabama showed that they might be the only team in college football that can beat the Clemson Tigers. Although Clemson played a much worse team, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, than who Alabama battled, Dabo Sweeney’s team dominated. G-Tech had no answer for soon to be Heisman Trophy winner Trevor Lawrence. Trevor threw for over 300 yards and 5 touchdowns before halftime on his way to leading the Tigers to a 73-3 win.
Clemson’s afternoon destruction of Georgia Tech may have gotten into rival North Carolina’s collective head. As a -14 road favorite, the Tar Heels were supposed to dominate Florida State. Instead, FSU rushed out to a 31-7 lead. North Carolina provided a furious rally in the second half only to fall short 28-31.
The loss knocked North Carolina from the College Football Playoff discussion. The Heels don’t play Clemson. They do play Notre Dame and Miami. The Heels must beat the Fighting Irish and Hurricanes and then upset Clemson in the ACC Championship to have any shot of making the CFP.
Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Wisconsin start their CFP quest this week
The Wisconsin Badgers host the Illinois Illini on Friday and Ohio State hosts Nebraska on Saturday. Michigan also plays on Saturday. The Wolverines are on the road against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Of the three most important Big Ten matchups in College Football Week 8, Michigan versus Minnesota is the most intriguing. Both teams are ranked in the Top 25, but Minnesota returns more players than Michigan does. Wolverine fans shouldn’t expect a Michigan blow out win.
The Illini upset the Badgers last season. Wisconsin must replace Jonathan Taylor at running back. Illinois returns enough to give the Badgers a scare. So, make sure to handicap this one before backing Wisconsin ATS.
Because North Carolina lost, Ohio State should start their season ranked fourth or fifth in the AP Poll. The Buckeyes have just eight games to impress the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. Ryan Day will encourage his team to win every game via a blowout. If Ohio State is as good as they look on paper, they should dominate Nebraska by over 20 points.
Right now, a 3 team race for the National Championship
Right now, Clemson and Alabama are favorites to win the National Championship. The other team that national title sports bettors have backed are the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Alabama and Clemson proved they have what it takes to win the title. Will the Buckeyes show on October 24 against Nebraska that they belong in the elite group?
Have a great week!
