College Football played its second week of the season with a couple of strong Big 12 teams stepping it up. The SEC doesn’t start until Sep. 26 while, at least for now, the Pac 12 and Big Ten continue to say their seasons will happen in the spring. That left Oklahoma and Texas to show why they could end up strong contenders for the College Football Playoff. Check out the details in our NCAAF update for Sep. 14! Oklahoma and Texas roll
Granted, the Oklahoma Sooners played Missouri State. Still, it was nice to see that Lincoln Riley’s version of Quarterback U hasn’t taken a backward step in this coronavirus inflicted season. Sooner quarterbacks have won 2 of the last 3 Heisman Trophies.
Spencer Rattler, the newest edition to Oklahoma’s School for Signal-Callers could be the next to strike the pose. Spencer completed 14-of-17 for 290 yards. He threw 4 touchdowns. Rattler probably could have thrown 8 TDs if Riley hadn’t pulled him for Tanner Mordecai.
Rattler isn’t a running quarterback ala Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts. Or, maybe, he is. Spencer didn’t have to show his wheels in the win over Missouri State. We don’t know just yet. What we do know is that Rattler has amazing instincts.
Another Big 12 quarterback with amazing instincts is Texas’ Sam Ehlinger. During the seniors’ career at Texas, Ehlinger has shown signs that he can play this game and that he can play it well. All the potential came to fruition in the Longhorns’ dynamite 59-3 win over UTEP.
Like Rattler, Sam didn’t face a great team. Still, he threw for 426 yards and 5 touchdown passes. If Spencer Rattler and Sam Ehlinger keep this up, the Big 12 Championship could be a battle between Oklahoma and Texas, and it could be for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Sooners and Longhorns rolled, Cyclones and Wildcats not so much
The Big 12 proved they’ve got a couple of title contenders. The conference also proved that they’ve got a couple of pretenders. Because neither the Big Ten nor Pac 12 will play this fall, Kansas State and Iowa State entered their first games ranked in at least one poll.
A couple of Football Championship Series teams didn’t get the memo they were supposed to help Iowa State and K-State look good.
Louisiana, formerly UL-Lafayette, dominated Iowa State. The Ragin’ Cajuns rolled the Cyclones 31-14. Future NFL Draft Pick wide receiver Peter LeBlanc had 5 catches for 82 yards and a TD. Louisiana also ran back a punt and a kick-off for touchdowns.
Not to be outdone, Arkansas State, the Red Wolves, upset Kansas State 35-31. That’s two weeks in a row the Wolves have covered. Although Memphis beat Arkansas State 37-24 in their first game, the Red Wolves entered a +18 underdog.
We must keep squads like the Cajuns and Red Wolves on our radars this season. We don’t get the luxury of betting against overrated programs from the Pac 12 and Big 12 this fall.
Clemson wins, but be careful about those +150 odds
The Clemson Tigers won, but, let’s be honest, they didn’t dominate the way so many of us had hoped they would. No doubt, Clemson remains a solid favorite to win the ACC and National Championship.
But the Tigers may not be a +150 choice to win the trophy. Heck, Clemson could have trouble winning the ACC. Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels look better this season than they were last season.
The Heels got desperately close to upsetting the Tigers in 2019. Clemson replaced three starters along the offensive line. If North Carolina is better this season, and the 31-6 win over Syracuse looks like they are, the Tar Heels could contend for the ACC title. Also, let’s not forget that Notre Dame will play in the ACC this season.
So, don’t blindly back the Tigers. Wait for a possible bad but still winning performance and then jump on Clemson to win the championship.
