Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Betting Preview & Picks

Written by on December 13, 2022

There are a couple of different ways to approach bowl games when it comes time to wager on them. Some bettors like to wager on them all, while others wait until we get into the bigger games, such as the New Year’s Six. For those who fall into the latter category, it is often because of an unfamiliarity with the teams playing in the lesser bowls, but the good news for those who want to play is that there is a ton of information out there that can help you make an informed bet. We are going to do our best to cover as many of the games as possible, so we are turning our attention to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, which is set to be played on December 20 at 3:30 PM EST. It will be the San Jose State Spartans and the Eastern Michigan Eagles going head-to-head in this one, with the Spartans in as a 3 ½ point favorite. The point total for this one is set at 54 ½. Let’s take a closer look at both teams for your NCAAF bets.

Who is Playing the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl?

San Jose State Spartans

The Spartans became bowl eligible with 3 games still to play in the season, which may help explain why they relaxed a little in the home stretch. They lost back-to-back games before closing out the season with a win over Hawaii. The disappointing part for the Spartans was that those 2 losses took them out of the running for a trip to the Mountain West Conference Championship Game. San Jose State ended the season averaging over 27 PPG, while surrendering a touch over 20 PPG. There are some concerns about the Spartans against the spread, starting with the fact that they failed to cover in their last 6. They are also 0-5 ATS in their last 5 as a favorite and have seen the UNDER hit in 8 of 12 games this season.

Eastern Michigan Eagles

The Eagles ended the season with a very respectable 8-4 record, while winning 4 of their last 5 games. Their lone loss in that stretch came at the hands of Toledo, a defeat that costed them the division, with Toledo going to the Conference Championship Game on the heels of the tiebreaker. That is sure to be disappointing, but it may also be what drives them to go out and get the win in this bowl game. The Eagles scored just shy of 29 PPG this season, but they also gave up the same number, so they have a defense that can be exploited. Eastern Michigan was 6-6 ATS this season and 6-6 O/U. They are 0-4 in bowl games under their current head coach.

Betting and Prediction

The lack of wins for Eastern Michigan in bowl games make it hard for me to consider wagering on them for the SU win. I am also not convinced that they can even cover the spread here, as their defense does not fill me with a ton of confidence. With that in mind, I think it will be the Spartans who win and cover here, but I also really like the OVER in this one.
