Louisville vs Alabama NCAA Football Week 1 Odds & Pick

Why Bet on Furman?

Furman obviously has no chance to win but perhaps it can hang within six touchdowns. And in an interesting twice, Furman’s starting QB in this game could be … a Clemson student. Huh, you ask. Harris Roberts is enrolled in a cooperative educational exchange program that allows students to play at one school while pursuing their desired degree at another. Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree in pre-engineering from Furman in three years. He is scheduled to earn a second bachelors from Clemson, which is about 30 miles away, in mechanical engineering. While juggling the curriculum (and the commute), Roberts is competing for Furman’s starting quarterback role. through the last 30 years, several Paladins participated in the partnership with Clemson, but never concurrent with any of Furman’s previous 58 games against the Tigers. Roberts backed up All-SoCon quarterback P.J. Blazejowski last season. In reserve duty, Roberts rushed for 71 yards on five carries and completed nine of 13 pass attempts for 110 yards. Whichever QB it will be should have a solid group of receivers. The solid corps of returnees should help the Paladins overcome the graduation of productive four-year letterman wide receiver Logan McCarter, who caught 31 passes for 555 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. That returning group is led by Thomas Gordon. The preseason All-Southern Conference performer is coming off a 2017 campaign that saw him catch a team-leading 39 passes for 717 yards and a touchdown despite missing two games due to injury. The Paladin speedster averaged a solid 18.6 yards per catch a year ago and owns 82 career receptions. Furman is a very good FCS program. In 2017, under first-year coach Clay Hendrix, Furman finished with an 8-5 record and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs in their first appearance since 2013. The Paladins were ranked No. 19 in the final STATS poll of the 2017 season. Furman, which returns 15 starters and 51 lettermen from the 2017 team, is scheduled to play three teams ranked in the STATS preseason poll — Southern Conference rivals Wofford (No. 10) and No. 11 Samford and Elon, ranked No. 8 after losing to the Paladins in the first round of the 2017 FCS playoffs. Furman played another ACC school last year, losing 49-16 at NC State. In 2016, it opened the season at No. 12 Michigan State and only lost by 15.

Why Bet on Clemson?

The Tigers might have one of the best defensive lines in not just school or ACC history but NCAA history this year with four guys who could all go in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Clelin Ferrell, Austin Bryant, Dexter Lawrence, and Christian Wilkins form college football’s best unit. Ferrell, Wilkins, and Bryant were all expected to enter the 2017 draft. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Wilkins and 6-5, 260-pound Ferrell were first-team all-ACC picks last season. Bryant, at 6-5, 265, was named to the second team. Clemson was tied with Southern Cal for most sacks last season at 46. Ferrell led the team with 9 1/2 sacks with Bryant right behind at 8 1/2. Wilkins had 4 1/2 sacks. Bryant topped the Tigers with 15 1/2 of the team’s tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Besides graduating linebacker Dorian O’Daniel, the Tigers bring back their entire starting front seven from last season. Ferrell, offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt, Lawrence and Wilkins have all earned preseason AP All-America honors. Ferrell, Hyatt and Wilkins all earned first-team selections, while Lawrence was a second-team honoree. Clemson’s three first-team selections are tied with Wisconsin for the most from a single school among this year’s group. Clemson is one of only four schools to feature at least four total selections, joining Alabama, Wisconsin and Stanford. The No. 2 ranking equals the program’s highest preseason ranking in the AP Poll all-time, matching the preseason ranking awarded to the squad that earned the school’s second national championship in 2016. It marks the fifth Top 5 preseason ranking in the AP Poll in school history, including 1984 (No. 4), 1988 (4), 2016 (2) and 2017 (5). Clemson has met or exceeded its preseason ranking in the final AP poll in each of the last seven seasons. Dabo Swinney’s seven-year streak is the longest by a coach in college football history, exceeding five-year streaks by Ohio State’s John Cooper and Kansas State’s Bill Snyder. The only time in the last seven years that Clemson did not exceed its preseason ranking was 2013, when the Tigers both opened and concluded the year at No. 8.

Stunner if Furman even scores, but I’m still taking the points. Clemson wins something like 45-3.
