Louisiana Monroe Vs Oklahoma College Football Winning Favorites

Written by on September 8, 2016

If Week 1 of the college football season proved anything, it’s that the preseason betting odds should be used as a guideline rather than proof that the favorites are going to excel this season. The Oklahoma Sooners were something of a sexy pick for those bettors looking for an alternative to Alabama as a National Champion, but they went down hard to Houston in a neutral site game, and are now going to have to spend the rest of the season trying to claw their way back into the playoff picture. They certainly have an easier go of things, on paper at least, this weekend, but are surely going to have an eye on Week 3 when they have to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. Louisiana Monroe are coming into this one on the back of an opening week win, but it wasn’t an entirely convincing performance, which has to be somewhat troubling when getting ready to go up against what is sure to be a very wounded animal.

Why bet on the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks

The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks will have been happy to get an opening week win against Southern last weekend, but they may not be happy about how close it proved to be. ULM went into that one as a 14-point favorite, but they huffed and puffed their way through the first half before finally pulling away to get the 38-21 win. This is a team that leans very heavily on two players, both on the offensive side of the ball.  QB Garrett Smith is a versatile QB who can beat you with his arm or his feet (358 total yards last week), but who can make mistakes when pressured. RB Ben Luckett is another threat, and he managed 108 yards on 18 carries against Southern Last week.

Why bet on the Oklahoma Sooners

This may not be the biggest test that the Sooners are going to face this season, but it may be one that gives us an indication of what this team is about. They are sure to be reeling after going down 33-23 to the Houston Cougars last weekend, but it’s how they bounce back that will define what happens the rest of the way. There were some positives to be seen last week, especially when looking at QB Baker Mayfield, who threw for 323 yards and 2 TD’s, whilst also steering clear of turnovers. The big failing for the Sooners was the running game and special teams, both of which will need to improve if this team is to make the playoffs.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Sooners come into this one as a rather lofty 46.5-point favorite, which I think is a little on the steep side. Oklahoma, whether they want to or not, are going to have one eye on their meeting with Ohio State this week, and will be looking to get out of this one with a comfortable win.
