Louisiana Tech vs No. 5 Clemson | College Football Betting Favorites, Analysis & Prediction

It could be a bit of a trap game for No. 5 Clemson on Saturday when the Tigers host Louisiana Tech as Coach Dabo Swinney’s club might get caught looking ahead to next week’s big ACC game vs. ranked Wake Forest. Clemson is a solid favorite over the Bulldogs, though, on the NCAAF odds.

How to Bet Louisiana Tech at Clemson NCAA Football Odds & TV Info

  • When: Saturday, 8 PM ET
  • Where: Memorial Stadium
  • TV: ACC Network
  • Stream: ESPN app
  • Radio: Tunein.com
  • Opening NCAAF Lines: Clemson 34.5 (total 52.5)

Series History

Clemson leads 3-0. They last played in 2006 at Clemson and the Tigers won 51-0.

Why Bet on Louisiana Tech?

The Bulldogs (1-1) come off a 52-17 win over FCS school Stephen F. Austin. Louisiana Tech racked up 299 yards on the ground, anchored by Marquis Crosby who amassed 196 in the first half alone. The Bulldogs scored 45 unanswered points in route to Sonny Cumbie’s first career victory as their head coach.  Louisiana Tech put up 515 yards in 70 plays, running for 302 yards.

Quarterback Parker McNeil got his first start as a Bulldog, completing 11 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He transferred from Texas Tech where he spent last season with Cumbie. Matthew Downing came in the second half finishing 1-for-3 for 3 yards. Freshman Landry Lyddy saw the field for the first time, finishing 2-for-2 for 16 yards and rushed for 6 yards.

Smoke Harris registered his 15th career touchdown reception. He has at least one touchdown reception in every season since 2018. The defense kept the Lumberjacks at bay by forcing three turnovers and allowing just four third-down conversions out of 15. It was the seventh-straight game LA Tech forced a turnover.

The Bulldogs defense held the Lumberjacks to two touchdowns with 161 passing yards and 144 rushing yards. They racked up 63 tackles, two sacks, six tackles for loss, an interception, four broken-up passes, seven quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles.

Six Bulldogs landed on the 2022 C-USA Preseason Watchlist: Harris, OL Joshua Mote, DL Keivie Rose, LB Tyler Grubbs and K Jacob Barnes. LA Tech returns 17 starters, six on offense, eight on defense and three on special teams. In 2021, LA Tech forced 15 fumbles and ranked 12th nationally in fumbles recovered (12). This year LA Tech has forced four fumbles and recovered three. Offensively, the Bulldogs have yet to fumble this season.

“This is a team that will be a challenge for us,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “They got some dudes. Have 17 starters back and 24 transfers. Coach (Sonny) Cumbie coming in with variations of the air raid. The defensive coordinator brought some players with him from Stephen F. Austin so they got some good experience across the board. Have two quarterbacks that have played in both of their games. One guy (Matthew Downing) against Missouri, and then (Parker McNeil) led them against Stephen F. Austin.

Why Bet on Clemson?

Clemson (2-0) beat FCS school Furman 35-12 last Saturday. The Tigers had 376 yards total and scored touchdowns on five of their first six drives. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei completed 21-for-27 passes for 231 yards and added 36 yards rushing. Clemson rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries, led by Will Shipley, who ran for two more scores for the second-straight game. No Clemson player at least 1980 has opened a season with multiple rushing touchdowns in three straight games.

The victory was Clemson’s 19th straight in home openers. The win extended Clemson’s longest winning streak in home openers all-time, ahead of its 17 from 1944-60. The Tigers also ran their home unbeaten streak to a nation-leading 35 in a row. No member of Clemson’s roster has lost a home game at Clemson in their careers.

Clemson (35) tied the 2006-11 Boise State Broncos for the 14th-longest home winning streak in FBS history. Clemson’s streak is only the 15th home winning streak of 35 games or more in FBS history and pulls Clemson within two games of the ACC record (Florida State, 37 from 1992-2001). Clemson is now a national-best 54-1 at home in the College Football Playoff era (since 2014).

Clemson improved to 119-13 against AP-unranked teams under Dabo Swinney. Clemson is now 96-3 against unranked teams since the start of the 2012 season. Clemson improved to 27-2 in September games since 2015.

Saturday’s game will be Clemson’s first of three scheduled this season against head coaches who have never faced Clemson: Louisiana Tech’s Sonny Cumbie, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman and Miami’s Mario Cristobal. A win against Cumbie’s Louisiana Tech squad would improve Clemson to 41-4 since 2011 when facing an opposing head coach for the first time.

Clemson has won eight consecutive games overall, the longest streak in the Power Five. Clemson has not trailed at any point in its last five games, victories against Wake Forest, South Carolina, Iowa State, Georgia Tech and Furman. Clemson last trailed on Nov. 13 last year.

Clemson is attempting to reach the 30-point mark for the eighth time in a nine-game span, dating to last season. Clemson has averaged 34.8 points during its current eight-game winning streak.
