For the first time this year, neither Alabama nor Georgia is the betting favorite to win this season’s national championship. Instead, it’s unbeaten Ohio State of the Big Ten at +200.

Since a close win over Notre Dame in the season opener, the Buckeyes are crushing people. They routed Michigan State 49-20 in Week 6 as QB C.J. Stroud threw for six touchdowns, connecting three times with Marvin Harrison Jr., to finish the night completing 21-of-26 throws for 361 yards. He’s now the clear Heisman Trophy favorite.

Three of Ohio State’s scoring drives were for more than 90 yards. On the ground, TreVeyon Henderson rushed for one touchdown and 118 yards on 19 carries. Harrison Jr. led with seven catches while Emeka Egbuka led in total yards with 143 and a touchdown. Ohio State totaled 614 yards in offense while the Spartans put 202 on the board. The Ohio State defense held Michigan State to 7 yards on the ground. The Buckeyes are off in Week 7.

One team making a move in the title odds is unbeaten Clemson, now +1400. The Tigers have won a national-best 12 straight games entering Saturday’s matchup at Florida State. Clemson is now 33-4 in true road games since 2015.  The Tigers have won 37th consecutive games against unranked opponents when ranked in the AP Top 5, the longest active streak in college football. Clemson is 121-13 against AP-unranked teams under Dabo Swinney, including a 98-3 mark against unranked teams since the start of the 2012 season.

Swinney’s team improved to 123-2 since 2011 when leading after three quarters. Clemson has now won 102 of its last 103 games when holding teams under 23 points (dates to 2010). Clemson has a 120-2 record when totaling more first downs than its opponent since 2011 and has won its last 61 such contests.

Clemson has hit the 30-point mark in every game this season, the program’s third time reaching 30 points in each of the first six games of a season. This week, Clemson will be in search of its 10th 7-0 start in program history and its seventh such start under Swinney. Clemson opened the 1948, 1981, 2000, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 campaigns with seven straight wins, earning a conference title (either Southern Conference or ACC) in eight of those nine seasons.

Unbeaten Southern Cal is now +2000 to win it all but has a very tough game at ranked Utah on Saturday. USC is 6-0 to start the season for the first time since starting 6-0 in the 2006 season. That team finished 11-2 overall, with a Pac-10 co-championship, a win over Michigan in the Rose Bowl and a No. 4 final AP ranking. The last USC team to win more games to start a season was the 2005 Trojans which went 12-0 in the regular season before falling to Texas in the Rose Bowl.

USC is one of the 15 remaining undefeated teams this season. The Trojans have won 5 of their first 6 games by 10 points or more. The last time USC won more games in a season by 10 or more points was the 2017 season (7 games won by 10 or more points).

First-year head coach Lincoln Riley warned that USC’s record in the first half of the schedule doesn’t guarantee success at the end of the season.

“There’ll be several 6-0 teams; some that finish really well, some that finish okay, and some that don’t finish very good,” Riley explained. “So it’s great, but it is just a start. It’s not a guarantee of anything.”

Georgia is now the +225 second favorite behind Ohio State and should have little trouble at home vs. Vanderbilt this week. Georgia is among six teams in the nation to have four wins vs. Power 5 opponents. The other four teams are Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Kansas State and USC.

Despite a record 15 players getting selected in the NFL draft, including five defenders in the first round, Georgia’s defense this season ranks as one of the country’s best again. The Bulldogs stand fourth nationally in scoring defense at 10.7 points/game. Georgia is allowing teams to convert on third downs 28 percent of the time (23 of 82) and that ranks 12th nationally.

The 2022 Bulldog defense kept No. 3 Oregon to only a field goal in the season opener. This marked the first time Oregon had failed to score a touchdown in a game since 2017. Late in the fourth quarter, Georgia had an impressive goal line stand late that ended at the 2-yard line following a 19-play, 87-yard drive that lasted 8:47. Georgia’s first touchdown allowed this year came at South Carolina in game three this year with 53 seconds remaining in the game.
