College Football Top 25 – Winners and Losers After Week 11
Winners
- No. 6 Florida (5-1)
There was no bigger winner than sixth-ranked Florida who scored early and often in their stunning 63-35 blowout win over Arkansas on Saturday. Quarterback Kyle Trask gave his chances of winning this year’s Heisman trophy a huge boost by tossing six TD passes to help the Gators improve their chances of reaching the CFP. Trask has thrown at least four touchdown passes in every game this season and were it not for Florida’s narrow 41-38 road loss at Texas A&M, the Gators would almost certainly be ranked inside the Top 4.
- No. 9 Indiana (4-0)
Now, up to ninth in the national rankings, Indiana is proving themselves to be very legitimate as both, a conference championship – and CFP – contender. In their first game as an AP top-10 team since 1969, Indiana completed their double-double win against Michigan-based Big Ten rivals by spanking Michigan State 24-0 one week after pounding Michigan 38-21. Dual-threat quarterback Michael Penix Jr. passed for 320 yards with two TD passes to lead the way to victory while hooking up with gifted wide receiver Ty Fryfogle a whopping 11 times for 200 yards and two scores. I’ve watched Penix Jr. every game this season and I genuinely believe the sophomore is as good of a team leader and clutch player as any other signal-caller in the country. Make no mistake about it, Penix Jr. and the Hoosiers are for real!
- No. 10 Wisconsin (2-0)
Wisconsin had two games canceled following their emphatic 45-7 season-opening blowout win over Illinois on Oct. 23, but the Badgers and quarterback Graham Mertz sure didn’t look rusty in smacking reeling Michigan around en route to a commanding 49-11 rout of the Wolverines on Saturday – in Ann Arbor, no less. After tossing a stupendous five TD passes in his first start in Week 1, Mertz tossed two TD passes and Wisconsin rushed for a jaw-dropping 341 yards and five scores on the ground. If the Badgers can avoid any more COVID-19 issues within the program, they’ll certainly challenge for the Big Ten title – and a spot in the CFP.
- No. 8 Cincinnati (7-0)
The Bearcats moved to 7-0 on the season by routing conference rival East Carolina 55-17 on Saturday. Cincinnati actually took their foot off the gas pedal after going into the break up 35-0 or the final score could have been much worse. Cincinnati has won every game this season by at least two touchdowns while winning each of their last five games by at least three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Desmond Ridder isn’t getting much mention as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate, but I’m thinking he should be after his latest effort saw him pass for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Ridder has recorded at least one TD pass and one rushing score in four straight games.
- No. 14 Oregon (2-0)
Truth be told, I’m not all that impressed with Oregon’s 43-29 win over Washington State this past weekend. However, the Ducks are on the ‘winners’ list this week simply because they were able to suit up and keep their 2020 record unblemished. Oregon stormed back from a 19-7 second quarter deficit to get the win as quarterback Tyler Shough tossed four TD passes as the Ducks topped the 35-point plateau for the second straight game.
- No. 21 Liberty (8-0)
Forget that old saying, Give me liberty or give me death! Just give me more Liberty football please, particularly since I’m in no rush to be digging up dirt! All attempts at humor aside, the Flames completely annihilated Western Carolina 58-14 on Saturday as quarterback Malik Willis passed for 306 yards with three TD rosses and no picks to bring his season total to 15 TD passes and only one interception. Liberty recently extended head coach Hugh Freeze to a long-term deal ad rightfully so. The Flames, who have already beaten the likes of ACC residents, Syracuse and Virginia Tech, are very, very good, even if they don’t get the national publicity they so clearly deserve this season.
- No. 15 Marshall (7-0)
Now, ranked 15th in the nation, Marshall kept their 2020 record unblemished by spanking Middle Tennessee 42-14 on Saturday as redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells passed for a stellar 336 yards with five TD tosses and no picks. Wells has thrown a dozen touchdown passes over the last four games and the Thundering Herd look dangerous with a capital ‘D’.
Three more teams were winners this past weekend was No. 18 USC moved to 2-0 on the season despite needing another big effort late to get past Arizona 34-30 on the road on Saturday. Last, but not least, the 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (7-1) annihilated South Alabama 38-10 at home to move to 7-1 on the year with their only loss coming being a narrow 30-27 defeat unbeaten Coastal Carolina.
Now, let’s move on to this week’s list of programs that clearly didn’t fare too well this past weekend.
Losers
- No. 19 SMU (7-2)
Previously 19th-ranked SMU was the only nationally ranked team to lose this past weekend. The Mustangs were on the wrong end of a crushing 28-24 road loss against Tulsa that both, dropped them out of the national rankings while making them the biggest loser in the country this past weekend.
- Texas A&M (5-1)
The only reason I have the Texas A&M on this list is because the Aggies were starting to find their collective stride b winning four straight – until having their winning ways halted by COVID-19-related issues. The Aggies were looking good as they got set to visit Tennessee on Saturday, but now they’re set to host Ole Miss in the first of what is four remaining regular season games on their 2020 docket. Could the layoff hurt the CFP-hopeful Aggies? Who knows in what has undeniably been the strangest football season in the last century.
- Michigan (1-3)
I know Michigan isn’t ranked in the national Top 25, but unless you’re a huge Wolverines fan or Michigan alumni, it’s almost exciting to see the perennial winning program fall to depths which we haven’t seen since enigmatic head coach Jim Harbaugh arrived on campus to lead his Alma mater back to national title contention prior to the 2015 season. Michigan had recorded three 10-win seasons under Harbaugh in 2015, 2016 and 2018 while going 8-5 in 2017 and 9-4 last season. Now, sitting at 1-3 after three games, the Wolverines are in trouble and reports say that Harbaugh could be gone after this season!
