The annual Bedlam game between bitter rivals Oklahoma State and Oklahoma is usually wildly entertaining but also usually ends with OU winning. The No. 18 Sooners are favored to do so again Saturday as they welcome the No. 14 Cowboys.

Last Meeting

In 2019, Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State 34-16. Kennedy Brooks rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown, but he’s no longer at Oklahoma. Jalen Hurts passed for 163 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 63 yards and a score and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass for the Sooners in their fifth straight victory in the series. Hurts is now with the Eagles. Oklahoma State star Chuba Hubbard ran for 104 yards and a touchdown. Oklahoma held Oklahoma State to 335 yards.

This will be the 115^th meeting between the schools. OSU (5-1) also last played on Nov. 7 and beat Kansas State 20-18. Jason Taylor II returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and Oklahoma State stopped the Wildcats’ 2-point try that would have tied the game with 2:08 to go. Kansas State had one last opportunity to win the game, but Tre Sterling intercepted a pass at midfield with 1:38 left to clinch the OSU victory. The Pokes trailed 12-0 at the half but they remained in control of their own destiny in the Big 12 title race with the victory.

Cowboys QB Spencer Sanders was held to just 108 yards passing without star wide receiver Tylan Wallace (he will play Saturday) and with running back Chuba Hubbard slowed by an injury. LD Brown helped to pick up the load, running for 110 yards. Sanders averaged only 4.7 yards per attempt while converting a paltry 4-of-15 third downs and leading the offense to 256 yards of total offense.

On offense, the Cowboys rank among the top three in the Big 12 in rushing offense, passing efficiency, completion percentage and red zone offense. Wallace and Chuba Hubbard have accounted for 1,221 of OSU’s 2,466 scrimmage yards this season (49.5 percent) and are the FBS active career leaders in receiving yards and rushing yards per game, respectively.

OSU’s defense has held its first six opponents to a combined total of 107 points, which marks the fewest points allowed in the first six games of a season during Mike Gundy’s tenure as head coach (2005-present). Allowing only 17.8 points per game this season, OSU ranks 15th nationally in scoring defense. The Cowboys have held their opponents to a combined total of 21-for-90 on third down attempts for an FBS No. 4 conversion rate of 23.3 percent.

Saturday will mark just the seventh since the start of the AP Poll in 1936 that OSU is ranked higher than OU at the time of the Bedlam game (in years at least one team was ranked), and the series is tied at 3-3 in those contests.

The Sooners (5-2) have been off since routing Kansas 62-9 on Nov. 7. Rhamondre Stevenson ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Stevenson, in his second game back from a suspension, also caught four passes for 60 yards. Spencer Rattler passed for 212 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score to help the Sooners (win their fourth straight game. The Sooners got a scare when Rattler left briefly in the second quarter with what appeared to be an injury to his left hip, but he was able to return.

Oklahoma scored six rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive game. The last time OU scored at least six rushing TDs in back to back games was 1987 (seven vs. Tulsa; six vs. Iowa State). Oklahoma gained 200 rushing yards and averaged a season-high 6.5 yards per carry. It was OU’s third game this season with at least 200 rushing yards (also vs. Texas and Texas Tech).

OU has scored at least 28 points in a school-record 59 consecutive games. The next longest streak nationally since at least 1980 is 31 by UCF (2017-19). The next longest active streak is 19 games by Alabama (does not play today). OU has scored at least 60 points in consecutive games for the first time since 2015 (won 63-27 vs. Texas Tech; won 6-27 vs. Kansas).

Saturday contest will mark the first Bedlam night game in Norman. The teams have met at night eight times, with seven of those outings in Stillwater and once in Oklahoma City.
