Ohio State vs Maryland NCAA Football Week 12 Odds & Pick

Written by on November 15, 2018

It’s pretty simple for No. 9 Ohio State on Saturday: Win at mediocre Maryland, and the Buckeyes will host Michigan for a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. And a win there likely gets OSU into the College Football Playoff. The Terps are more than two-TD NCAAF betting underdogs.

The Terps were trashed 62-14 at OSU last year. The Buckeyes held Maryland to 66 total yards — their fewest yards allowed since yielding 60 against Indiana in 1960. Ohio State held the Terrapins to 16 passing yards and only six first downs. The 16 passing yards allowed was the lowest since giving up zero yards to Wisconsin in 1989. Quarterback J.T. Barrett (now gone) threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the first half for Ohio State, which led 41-7 at the half. Barrett was 20 for 31 for 261 yards before taking a seat near the end of the third quarter. J.K. Dobbins ran the ball 13 times for 96 yards and a touchdown for Ohio State.

Saturday will be the fifth-ever meeting against Maryland since the Terps joined the Big Ten in 2014. Ohio State has won each of the previous four games.

Why Bet on OSU?

The Buckeyes won at No. 18 Michigan State last week 26-6. The 20-point margin of victory was Ohio State’s largest in East Lansing since a 45-7 win in 2008.

The teams played through a scoreless first quarter and Ohio State accounted for the only touchdown of the first half as Dwayne Haskins quick-pitched to Parris Campbell from a yard out to cap a 55-yard drive. Ohio State benefited from several Spartan miscues in the second half on their way to scoring 19 unanswered points to end the game.

For the third year in a row, Mike Weber topped 100 yards rushing against the Spartans. This time around, he toted 22 carries for 104 yards and a score. Haskins completed 24-39 passes for 227 yards through the air. Haskins completed 20 or more passes for the ninth time in 10 games this season and moved into second place on the single-season passing list (3,280 yards). Haskins’ 33 TD passes this year are two shy of tying J.T. Barrett’s single-season record of 35 in 2017.

WR Terry McLaurin surpassed the 1,000 career receiving yard mark (1,011 yards). He, along with Campbell (1,378 yards) and K.J. Hill (1,378) are the first trio of teammates to go over 1,000 career receiving yards. Haskins needs 51 yards passing to establish a new Ohio State single-season record. The record has been held by Joe Germaine (3,330) for 20 years.

Over the last two games, Ohio State opponents are six-for-30 on third downs, an 80 percent hold rate for the Buckeyes’ defense. In wins, the last two weeks over Nebraska and Michigan State, Ohio State’s defense has allowed just 3.5 yards per carry. Ohio State’s average starting field position has been its own 30-yard line or better in six of 10 games this year. The team is 6-0 in those contests.

Why Bet on Maryland?

The Terps might not make a bowl at 5-5, presuming a loss here, because they were 34-32 losers last week to Indiana. After going up 6-0 in the first quarter, the Terrapins were outscored 31-9 and at one point trailed 31-15 in the third quarter. After 17 unanswered Maryland points gave the Terps the lead late in the fourth quarter, Indiana hit a field goal that turned out to be the game-winner with 2:32 to go in the game.

Anthony McFarland’s 210 yards was a career high and the most for a Maryland player since senior Ty Johnson ran for 204 yards against Purdue in 2016. He also broke LaMont Jordan’s single-season freshman rushing record and now has 724 yards for the season. Sophomore Tyrell Pirgrome threw for 146 yards on 10-for-13 passing with a touchdown in relief of Kasim Hill, who sustained an injury in the third quarter. Freshman Jeshaun Jones caught six balls, a career high, for 67 yards and a score while Dontay Demus notched a career-high with 98 receiving yards.

Ohio State vs Maryland is going to be a good one.

Hill will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL. Hill twisted his left knee in the second quarter on Saturday. The sophomore tore the ACL in his right leg three games into his college career last fall. Hill threw for 1,083 yards and nine touchdowns during 10 games this season. Pigrome is expected to be Maryland’s starter going forward.

Maryland has been perfect in the red zone so far this season, converting on all 24 of its opportunities inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, making them the only team in the conference and one of only two in the country to be perfect inside the 20.

Through 10 games, Maryland has recorded 17 interceptions, the highest total in the country. The Terps are the only team in the Big Ten and one of just three FBS teams with at least one interception in every game this season.
